Job description

Summary:

The Sterile Processing Educator reports to the Manager of Sterile Processing. This position is accountable for coordinating education in the Sterile Processing (SP) department. The role includes assessing planning implementing and evaluating education and training as well as implementing quality improvement projects with proven measurable results for the Sterile Processing Department sites. This individual is accountable for ensuring professional development as well as coordinating the research and evaluation on new products and equipment and will be responsible for in-servicing staff on new products and equipment.

The SPD Educator develops a training certification program for sterile processing personnel on the standard techniques in decontamination assembly sterilization/HLD and distribution of sterile processing. Maintains appropriate documentation on all related information systems for the purpose of implementing training procedures for personnel to include EPIC People Soft Instrument tracking system etc. Establishes and maintains a relationship with the operating room management and staff as well as OR Educator for training development and education/in services etc.

Responsibilities:

Responsible for education for all sterile processing departments

Coordinates all sterile processing departmental orientation of new hires. Plans implements and promotes the education and training of staff members to ensure professional development within all areas of sterile processing. Evaluates reviews and reports the staffs ability to provide clean sterile and accurate instrument sets. This includes all technicians supervisors etc.

Provides educational programs for the sterile processing staff. Addresses and schedules all in-services for all campuses.

Reports on education metrics and improvement projects.

Trains all staff in the use of EPIC and implements training procedures for staff.

Ensures that the department meets all the regulations standards and guidelines consistent with AORN AAMI The Joint Commission CMS CDC OSHA and FDA requirements as well as the hospitals policies and procedures.

Completes all annual and on-going staff competencies for all sterile processing departments. This includes all technicians supervisors. etc.

Takes integral part on creating and maintaining sterile processing department policies with up-to-date information

Represents sterile processing through consultation on interdepartmental and interdisciplinary committees and task forces.

Completes required continuous training and education including computer-related requirements.

Maintains and updates professional knowledge by actively participating in professional seminars and organizations.

Manages and supervises the work of all preceptors or educator aides

Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Associates degree in related field required. Bachelors degree preferred.

Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) through Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or other certification boards and their equivalent certification.

Advanced Certifications: Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) and Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER). These must be obtained within 12 months 18 months and 24 months of hire as a condition of employment.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 5 years in the Sterile Processing field.

Some experience as an educator in quality or supervisory responsibility within the sterile processing field.

Strong working knowledge of principles and practices of sterile processing field.

Must demonstrate expert knowledge of instrumentation equipment inventory management and case cart management.

Proficient oral and written (English language) communication skills required in order to fulfill documentation and presenting requirements associated with the position.

Computer and Microsoft office proficient.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Works in patient care environment and sterile processing area with some exposure to infectious disease contaminated equipment supplies and instruments; hazards are minimized when established safety procedures are followed.

None.
