Staff Attorney - Student Legal Services Office of the Dean of Students
Job Summary The role of the position is to assist the director in providing legal advice, representation, education and mentoring to University of Illinois students. The position requires a commitment to advancing the educational growth and personal development of students through providing clear and thoughtful guidance through the students' legal issues. There is a focus on teaching students how to become self-advocates when faced with challenges to their legal well-being.
Duties & Responsibilities Consultation and Representation
- Research case law, ordinances, and statutes to properly advise and represent clients across legal disciplines permitted by the Student Legal Service operational plan.
- Advise clients of legal rights and responsibilities and possible decisional consequences of choices.
- Draft and respond to pleadings in eligible civil matters. Represent in eligible civil matters. Advise and represent in non-felony criminal and quasi criminal matters.
- Draft correspondence, negotiate claims on behalf of students for best possible outcomes based on facts and law.
Education and Administration
- Work with Director and Office Administrator to update and refine assessment tools and provide analysis of results.
- Mentor one or more international LL.M. students from the college of law.
- Prepare and present educational materials for use in in-person and remote workshops on legal issues of interest to students.
- Develop / regularly update streamlined downloadable topical educational materials for the office website.
- Become versed in the Student Legal Service operational plan and the Student Legal Service Strategic Plan. Actively participate in revising the plan(s) as determined by the Directing Attorney.
Continuing Legal Education
- Maintain the required number of credits of continuing legal education as mandated by the Illinois Supreme Court.
Physical Demands Minimum Qualifications Education Required:
- Juris Doctorate from accredited Law School.
Experience Required:
- Minimum of three years' experience in the practice of law or equivalent experience.
- Working knowledge of Westlaw, Microsoft Applications.
- Experience in litigation.
Specialty Factors Training, Licenses or Certifications Required:
- Licensed and in good standing to practice law in State of Illinois or ability to obtain admission by reciprocity.
Preferred Qualifications Experience Preferred:
- Knowledge/familiarity with assessment in higher education in the context of Student Services/Affairs or in a similar context.
- Course work or training in assessment.
- Experience in criminal/traffic/landlord-tenant advice/consumer rights/debtor-creditor.
- Experience working with a highly diverse population in law office or clinical setting.
- Ability to write and design educational materials employing a variety of media.
- Ability to learn and stay current with University organization, policies and practices as well as legal areas affecting University of Illinois students.
- Demonstrated ability to use social media and other means (classroom/seminars/community education/teaching) as educational tools.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Public speaking.
- Legal writing and research.
- Strong Interpersonal skills.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 4/15/2024. Salary range is $85,000 - $95,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
