Job Summary

Join the Louros Lab at UT Southwestern Medical Center located in the Center for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases . The Research Technician will be involved in cutting-edge projects to gain mechanistic insight into protein aggregation/amyloid formation, their crosstalk with other cellular factors and how this leads to the development and crosstalk between major neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS and Frontotemporal dementia). The aim is to utilize this knowledge to support the development of a new class of therapeutics. To accomplish this, lab projects involve approaches ranging from molecular and synthetic and structural biology (emphasis on cryoEM) to biophysical and computational characterization or biological engineering.

Preferred Skills

· At least two years of relevant lab experience with a bachelor’s degree.

· Lab managerial experience.

· Experience working with projects related to protein aggregation or neuroscience.

· Experience with one or more of the following technical areas–mammalian tissue culture, standard molecular biology techniques (e.g., cloning and PCR), protein purification, western blotting, flow cytometry, next-generation and/or single-cell sequencing, and/or animal models of disease.

· Experience with patient samples; phage display; working with synthetic peptides.

· Working knowledge of general laboratory practices and procedures, including safety practices and procedures.

· Knowledge of synthetic biology, biophysics, or structural biology.

· Excellent problem-solving, organizational, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills.

· Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

· Self-motivation and meticulous attention to detail.

Experience and Education

Completion of two (2) years of college or specialized training in histology, medical technology, or relevant field and one (1) year experience as Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent. or

· High school graduation includes courses in basic sciences such as physics, chemistry, biology, etc., and three (3) years of laboratory experience including two years as Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent.

Laboratory Duties

· Participating in the design and execution of research projects.

· Analyzing, recording, and organizing data generated from the experiments, and reporting results to research colleagues.

· Experiments will involve cloning, protein expression and purification, mammalian cell/tissue culture, patient tissue handling/extractions, flow cytometry, and display techniques.

· Significant contributions will be appropriately recognized by authorship in subsequent publications.

· Additional responsibilities include tracking and ordering laboratory supplies and performing general laboratory upkeep and support.

Job Duties

· Performs routine scientific and medical research work in science areas such as biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific field.

· Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.

· Records research data in accordance with prescribed procedures, discussing results with supervisor.

· Assists in collection of data for project reports.

· Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning implementation of new procedures.

· May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of laboratory personnel of lower grade engaged in limited phase of research project.

· Performs other duties as assigned .
