Director, Chief of Staff
The Chief of Staff role requires a big-picture strategic thinker who pays close attention to the details. The COS should be an excellent influencer and advisor, communicator, expected to ask the tough questions, to challenge the status quo, and who knows how to drive change. The COS plays a critical horizontal role, building and nurturing relationships within ES and Tech, across lines of business and partner teams, and even outside of Capital One. The COS is an important culture carrier for the organization, who models the right behaviors and helps to create a shared sense of purpose, leadership, and accountability with and for the team.
The role
This role reports to the SVP and sits on the senior leadership team. This role leads the Chief of Staff team, which stewards a portfolio of initiatives where central coordination and aligning with partners across the enterprise are key for well-managed delivery, including strategy development and implementation, Leadership Team routines, large-format and executive meetings/events.

Collaborative leadership: This role requires collaboration with a broad set of leaders and stakeholders
Client/team: In addition to being a member of the LT, you also support the LT members as your “clients”
Switching: Being able to toggle (and multi-task) is important, as you’ll engage on different topics and with a wide range of people and across the organization
Driving results with operational excellence: It’s necessary to constantly be driving to the big picture, and connected to the overall agenda, without losing sight of the myriad of things needed to ensure things keep moving and where personal ownership and involvement can help remove barriers and drive results
Organizational dynamics: A broader understanding of organizational dynamics, including Capital One dynamics, is helpful as you help position the team for success
Key partners include Product leaders across COF, Tech, other Chiefs of Staff, Corporate Strategy, Finance, HR, and Media Relations

Strong facilitation, negotiation and mediation skills; ability to drive to consensus/ decisions
Strong project management and organizational skills; meticulous attention to detail
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree or military experience
At least 3 years of experience influencing senior stakeholders
At least 4 years of experience in project or process management
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Business Administration or Communications
Experience serving in a Chief of Staff or critical Project Management role in a large, complex, and matrixed company
2+ years of experience managing visible projects which require the ability to manage cross-functional team members, remove obstacles, and influence appropriately
3+ years of people management experience
Proven ability to manage projects and activities in cross-functional team environment

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
New York City (Hybrid On-Site): $233,100 - $266,000 for Director, Chief of StaffSan Francisco, California (Hybrid On-Site): $246,900 - $281,800 for Director, Chief of Staff
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
