Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley's Office of Communications and Public Affairs leads communications for the most elite public higher education institution in the world, conveying the quality, diversity, vitality, preeminence and dedication to service of UC Berkeley. We tell the Berkeley story to inspire audiences and elevate the image of the university.

Our mission is to promote the University's excellence in teaching, research and public service. We provide leadership and services in five integrated functions: News and media relations, executive communications, critical communications, marketing and social media.

The campus news editor will work collaboratively and authoritatively to edit and manage the flow of a wide variety of communications projects from inception to completion, following the communications strategy of the office. Work will include tracking, developing and editing news stories, feature stories, podcasts, visual communications and social media posts.

The news editor is pivotal in shaping compelling news and communications content that elevates the prestige of UC Berkeley. This role is designed for a professional with a robust background in journalistic content development, editing and project management. The editor must be adept at managing a diverse range of editorial projects across channels, from inception to publication.

Working with a team of experienced writers and media relations professionals, the editor will be responsible for overseeing the creation and refinement of content for Berkeley News , the campus news website visited by an average of 350,000 visitors worldwide each month.

The editor will authoritatively guide communications and storytelling projects with an eye for news events, deadlines, visuals, audience, social media and digital storytelling best practices. This will include both project management skills and content editing skills, paying attention to story structure, angle, visuals, social media opportunities and other news writing best practices.

Projects may include explaining a world-changing research breakthrough, announcing major awards like the Nobel Prize, introducing a major campus priority or uplifting compelling stories about students, staff and faculty.

The editor must be comfortable working collaboratively with writers, copy editors, graphic designers, podcasters, videographers, strategic communicators and social media professionals under, at times, ambiguous circumstances. In that ambiguity, they must harness the power of the team, keenly using their indirect authority to execute on a communications goal.

The news editor must have a strong ability to navigate and communicate complex issues related to race, ethnicity, gender, ability and other intersectional topics. The editor must also demonstrate a full understanding of industry standards and accessibility best practices, as well a fluency with using metrics and analytics to measure success and improve audience engagement and reach.

The news editor will report to the executive director of news and media relations.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $95,300.00 - $114,000.00.
