Job Title: Social Scientist

Job Summary:

We are seeking a seasoned Social Scientist to support the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) in implementing the transformative First Step Act (FSA). Your role involves enhancing needs assessments, identifying evidenced-based correctional programs, and evaluating external submissions. You'll play a crucial part in reshaping inmate rehabilitation. Responsibilities Include:

• Enhancing the needs assessment process to match inmates with programs to address their criminogenic and critical reentry needs, by performing the following two tasks, related to implementation of the First Step Act (FSA):
  • Establishing and utilizing a methodical process whereby existing evidenced-based recidivism reduction correctional programs outside the Bureau (e.g., state departments of corrections, juvenile and military prisons) are identified, reviewed, and evaluated on the basis of whether they would add value to the Bureau and on the basis of evidence of empirical support. (70%-80% of position)
  • Conducting reviews of programs that are submitted from external sources to the Bureau using their expertise and the existing Bureau criteria for reviewing external programs. (20%-30% of position)

Required Qualifications and Skills:

• A graduate degree in a social science discipline
• The ability to obtain a Public Trust
• 15+ years of relevant experience
• Knowledge and experience in delivering, developing, or evaluating programs delivered in correctional facilities across a range of disciplines (e.g., mental health, education, faith-based)
• Service delivery work inside a correctional facility
• Familiarity with risk and needs assessment research and processes

Work Setting and Environment:

• Work is to be performed remotely, with periodic travel to state correctional facilities and Federal Bureau of Prison sites
• Part-time position, with hours fluctuating per week
