Teck Alaska Incorporated, Red Dog Operations, one of the world's largest producers of zinc concentrate, is recruiting for a Lead Environmental Compliance.
Rotation schedule will be 2 weeks on-site with 2 weeks off-site
Responsibilities:
• Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
• Support oversight of all aspects of environmental compliance for our operations, including permitting, reporting, training, and inspections. Ensures Environmental Monitoring programs, including surface and ground water, emissions, dust fall, acid rock generation, soils, waste management and other program are functioning as needed to maintain environmental compliance
• Stay current on evolving environmental regulations and proactively identify potential compliance risks
• Develop and implement environmental management systems and procedures
• Conduct internal audits and investigations to ensure compliance
• Support management and oversight of the environmental budgets and resources
• Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders across departments to ensure environmental awareness and integration
• Liaise with government agencies by negotiating and obtaining the necessary permits and variances which are in the best interest of the Company and which maintain the Company’s environmental standards. Interfaces with government officials in order to interpret policies and regulations, report non-compliance and mitigation measures, and to advise the Company of actions taken
• Liaise with other external stakeholders on environmental matters. Works closely with staff of the NANA Regional Corporation on environmental and regional issues and is the point of contact on all matters involving the Subsistence Committee
• Prepare and submit environmental reports and permit applications
• Investigate and resolve environmental incidents and complaints
• Stay informed of best practices in environmental management and sustainability
• Contribute to the development and implementation of the company's sustainability initiatives
• Participates in the development of strategic plans and strategies for Red Dog Operations
• Complete assigned work in a professional manner, including necessary measurements, calculations, analyses, interpretations, reporting and recommendations
• Performs other related duties as required
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or Engineering, or related field
• Minimum of 10 years relevant experience in environmental compliance, 15 years preferred
• Strong understanding of federal, state, and local environmental regulations applicable to Alaska operations. Experience working under State of Alaska environmental statutes/regulations/permits and with State of Alaska environmental regulatory agencies is required
• Experience with State of Alaska land use, water use, APDES programs, and other authorization programs preferred
• Experience with Federal statues/regulations/permits such as the EPA and RCRA program is required
• Knowledge of/practical experience with Environmental Management Systems
• Proven ability to manage complex projects and meet deadlines
• Experience with conducting environmental audits and investigations a plus
• Commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability
• Strong technical skills and the ability to analyze data and solve problems
• Ability to work in a team environment and work effectively across all levels of the business with competence to direct the activity of others
• An environmental compliance work history that includes the mining industry is preferred
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written (technical/financial) communication skills;
• Previous experience setting a budget, cost tracking and cost forecasting
• Ability to adapt and excel in a fast paced work environment including leading change, making recommendations and decision making
• Proficient in Microsoft Office such as excel, powerpoint and word
• Willingness and ability to take on additional tasks as needed
