Job Summary The Programming and Student Engagement Librarian will develop and implement programs and initiatives aimed at improving student success and engagement at the Institute with a focus on serving its undergraduate and historically underserved student population.
As part of the Access and Collection Services department, this dedicated position is designed to support the Caltech Library's goals for promoting equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging for all members of the Caltech community in all of our collections and services and engaging the Caltech community and beyond with services and resources that support research, instruction, and institutional needs.
Essential Job Duties - Facilitate students' experience with library physical and digital resources that support student success, belonging, and inclusion, with a particular focus on first-year, new transfer, first generation, and historically underserved students.
- Lead a rotating working group of library staff across departments to ideate, plan, and review library hosted events and programming with a focus on student enrichment.
- Expand and build relationships with student-centered units, programs, and departments across the Caltech campus.
- Coordinate external communication with the Caltech Library's communication coordinator to promote services and events.
- Develop a framework and methodology for library programming and service assessments.
- Conduct synchronous and asynchronous introductory library skills-related instruction utilizing available learning management systems and platforms.
- Keep abreast of innovations in inclusive and trauma-informed pedagogy to remain responsive to cultural differences that empower all students in a learning environment.
- Provide supplementary circulation duties as needed, which may include weekend and evenings.
- Collaborate on library committees, and attend Caltech and community meetings.
- Engage with professional development to keep abreast of best practices and innovations to continue improving library services and outreach.
Basic Qualifications - Master's degree in Library and Information Science or related field.
- Strong oral/written communication skills.
- Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty and student population.
- Capacity to thrive in an ambiguous, solution-oriented environment of a major research institution and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience working in a library public services setting.
- Teaching experience.
- Proficiency with designing signs and other printed materials.
- Knowledge of issues related to equity access to resources and services.
- Proficiency with project management and/or leading a team of peer collaborators.
