Job Description

The MLT position performs routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This position supports the Laboratory Manager/Director.

Responsibilities

Conducts chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood or urine, using microscope or automatic analyzer to detect abnormalities or diseases and enter findings into computer

Analyzes the results of tests or calibrations and quality control results to ensure conformity to specifications, using standards, processes and procedures

Performs and evaluates lab tests on patients of all ages in accordance with departmental policies and procedures

Performs phlebotomy procedures

Maintains/records strict Quality Control on all test procedures and instruments in accordance with departmental protocol

Calibrates, troubleshoots, performs preventative maintenance on various instruments and documents all pertinent information

Assists with departmental activities in Quality Assurance, Transfusion services, Performance Improvement, and productivity analysis

Conducts duties in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), and/or Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation (COLA), and The Joint Commission (TJC) standards

Serves as a trainer for Laboratory Information System (LIS) as assigned

Performs standard training documentation checks for new employees and annual competency documentation as outlined in Laboratory Policy and Procedures

Provides care appropriate to the age, spiritual, and cultural needs of the patient served

For Centra Lynchburg Hematology Oncology and Centra Southside Hematology Oncology only: Laboratory staff assist providers setting up for bone marrow aspiration and biopsy procedure. Access to local anesthetics, such as Lidocaine, Xylocaine and Carbocyanine, to assist with the procedure is required. The lab staff supply the bottle for the provider to withdraw the local anesthetic. The waste from the one time use bottle is disposed of in the charcoal waste system

Qualifications

Required Education: Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology program. Associates Degree with six (6) semester hours in chemistry and six (6) semester hours in biology

Preferred Experience: Medical Laboratory experience

Required Certifications and Licensures: Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) Certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or National Certifying Agency (NCA), or American Medical Technology (AMT)
