This position is in the Department of Food Science and Technology ( FST ) at Oregon State University as a full-time 1.00 FTE , 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor with expertise in sustainable food manufacturing.

FST is taking a leadership role in ensuring Oregon and beyond will meet 21st century food systems' challenges by integrating sustainability across all parts of our Mission – Education, Research, and Outreach. FST has a long tradition of strong stakeholder engagement and impactful research programs funded by annual research expenditures around $5M of federal and industry grant funding supporting around 50 graduate students.

Food system resilience is critical to meeting present and future needs for sustained provision of food supplies in the face of growing populations, changing climate, and increasingly integrated systems of production and manufacturing. This position is one of seven new positions related to Resilient Food Systems in the FST , Biological & Ecological Engineering ( BEE ) departments including Sustainable Food Packaging ( FST ), Food Chemistry ( FST ), Intelligent Food Systems Engineering ( FST / BEE ), Waste to Resource Engineer ( BEE / FST ), Sustainable Seafood Processing, and Seafood Safety at the OSU Seafood Research Center in Astoria. We seek individuals who can blend engineering theory with sustainable food production and consumption to meet the challenges of the future.

The overall goal of this position is to provide practical and economically viable solutions for sustainable food and beverage manufacturing. The incumbent will develop new technologies and processes that enable food and beverage manufacturing using less land, water, energy, raw materials and labor while creating less waste and greenhouse gases. The incumbent will work with the food and beverage industry to develop solutions to major challenges in food and beverage manufacturing and help industry comply with current and future state and national regulations.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):

Typically requires PhD or terminal degree (Masters for some Extension positions and MLS for Library positions), demonstrated ability to teach in a classroom Extension, or other setting, and develop a research program in the academic discipline/unit.

Requirements :

Ph.D. in Food Science, Food Engineering, Food Manufacturing/Processing, Manufacturing Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or in a closely related fields;


Experience conducting research in food processing/manufacturing or with techniques/skills used in food manufacturing and food systems;


Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;


Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.


This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Type:

Office and lab environment. Travel for field research and presentations. Work may take place in varying field conditions and environments. Evening and/or weekend work may be required for conference travel and research work in the field and laboratory.

Additional Salary Information: $85,000 – $95,000
