Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE
The Senior Center Operator 1 for the Park Plaza Senior Center is a part-time Human Services position responsible for organizing and scheduling activities for senior citizens within a neighborhood Senior Center that seek to enhance their quality of life and social interaction with others.



SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position reports directly to the Senior Center Services Director.



SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position does not exercise supervision over other functions.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE POSITION
Reads and explains Federal, State and Agency regulations and policies which govern the delivery of center recreational, nutritional and educational services, from program participants and the public.


Checks the daily delivery of food to verify that meals are delivered on schedule in the amounts ordered, that the temperatures are in the safe-zone, and that the quality of the meals is acceptable through personal observation and discussion with program participants.


Supervises food service for sanitation and portion control.


Schedules with the director’s approval, the presentation of educational, recreational or other programs led by instructors under outside contract or from other organizations, using information obtained from personal observation and discussion with program participants.


Asks for assistance from program participants in preparing center facilities for the serving and consumption of meals, serving meals and cleaning physical facilities and equipment following meals. When assistance is not available, manager is responsible for the completion of the tasks.


Speaks informally with program participants to encourage them to join in the center’s recreational and educational activities and to stimulate social interaction.


Resolves complaints, interpersonal conflicts and personal problems of program participants.


Collects donations from program participants for meals, activities and supplies when required.


Verifies and records data entered into the Copilot System by clients on a daily basis along with closing out each month within 10 days.


Records the receipt and expenditures of center funds using standard Excel forms, to be audited annually by Director.


Keeps up-to-date records on all clients and their emergency contacts.


Reviews and updates client intakes on a yearly basis.


Deposits donations in a bank on a daily basis.


Evaluates the success of center services in accomplishing program goals through personal observations and comparison with applicable Federal, State and Agency laws, regulations or policies and informal discussions with program participants in order to recommend improvements in the delivery of services to participants.


Orders food service and other supplies from Area Agency on Aging Staff.


Orders and records transportation services as needed.


Refers program participants to appropriate Federal, State, Local, or private human services agencies to obtain benefits and services when they are eligible.


Maintains certificates and attends training sessions as required.


Acquire and maintain, at the direction of the Director, the necessary training to perform Pennsylvania Department of Aging Health and Wellness programs/Workshops.


Coordinate a minimum of one (1) health promotion and one (1) disease prevention program and/or activity per fiscal year.


Coordinate a minimum of two (2) Pennsylvania Department of Aging Endorsed Evidence Based Program Workshops per fiscal year.


Complete required paperwork for all Pennsylvania Department of Health and Wellness programs as instructed.


Schedule or Administer monthly nutrition education.


As situations arise, may assist with participant’s personal hygiene and assures physical facility has returned to operational conditions.


Monitors custodial services, such as trash removal, floor cleaning, etc. for the care of a center’s physical facilities.


As needed, will serve as a substitute Operator covering other centers. Other locations include, but are not limited to, Bangor, Nazareth, Bath, Bethlehem, Cherryville and Northampton areas. Work hours may also vary according to each center. Employee must provide their own transportation to assigned center.




REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Three months of experience in providing direct services in a human services, education or a community based setting to the aging population or to individuals from various cultures and socio-economic backgrounds or to individuals who have physical, intellectual or emotional disabilities; OR


Any equivalent combination of experience and training.


Employee assigned to this title will be required to possess and maintain a valid and current motor vehicle operator’s license. Must have an acceptable driving record. Personal vehicle required for County business, employee is eligible for mileage reimbursement.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.


Ability to communicate effectively orally. Ability to communicate effectively in writing.


Ability to perform basic arithmetical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).


Ability to organize and lead the activities of people, individually and in groups.


Ability to record information on standardized forms, such as the names and addresses of consumers, the number of consumers in attendance, the receipt and expenditures of funds and related data, either manually or through the use of computer software programs.


Ability to establish effective working relationships with consumers, co-workers and personnel from various public and private agencies.


Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.


Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English to perform the duties of this position.



TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Telephone, personal computer (including word processing and spreadsheet software), calculator, writing implements, fax machine, copy machine, and paper shredder.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, talk or hear.


The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The noise level in the Senior Center can be moderately noisy.
