Departmental Overview
University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens UC Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alumni, parents, undergraduate and graduate students, and friends of the University, raising public awareness about Berkeley and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus' philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. The Division handles a range of central activities and services encompassing communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, and more.
Within this umbrella, the growing Office of Alumni Relations (OAR) works to inspire lifelong alumni engagement that advances Berkeley's positive impact on the world. The Office of Alumni Relations serves as the university's first-ever hub for leading alumni programs and strategy across Berkeley's schools, colleges, departments, and units, developing new initiatives and working in collaboration with the independent Cal Alumni Association (CAA) to implement the campus-wide alumni engagement plan.
Position Overview The
Deputy Director, Alumni Engagement uses advanced concepts and university objectives to resolve highly complex issues related to the engagement of the more than 550,000 living graduates of UC Berkeley. Leads the day-to-day operations of the 10-person Office of Alumni Relations in alignment with the campus-wide alumni engagement plan. Includes program, volunteer relations, budget analysis, and personnel. The
Deputy Director works in close partnership with the Berkeley Career Engagement Center, Admissions, Student Affairs, campus-wide academic and administrative units, UDAR Pipeline Development, Constituent Programs, and Major Gifts teams, the Cal Alumni Association, Cal Athletics and others to plan, develop, and implement alumni engagement strategies across campus. The Director determines objectives, directs programs, develops strategies and policies, manages people, budget analysis, and physical resources, and functions with a high degree of autonomy within alumni and constituency groups that are typically complex or large and may include controversial and/or politically sensitive issues or content. Reporting to the Chief Alumni Officer, the
Deputy Director is the senior member of the Office of Alumni Relations staff and may serve as proxy/representative for the Chief Alumni Officer in external meetings and communications.
Responsibilities
- Guides, directs and manages unit(s) charged with identifying, building, nurturing and maintaining effective relationships with alumni and other key constituencies. Oversees a professional and administrative team of 4 to design, develop, and implement short and long-term strategic plans, programs, events, communication, and activities within alumni strategy. Spearheads the team's efforts to connect with the worldwide alumni base, employing data-informed decisions, adept communication, and cooperative alliances with critical campus counterparts. Directs the team in delivering alumni initiatives aimed at fostering increased alumni engagement and driving philanthropic support as measured by the University's annual alumni engagement metrics report to the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
- Plans, develops and implements alumni programs including regional program. Manages all aspects of complex alumni external relations program including affinity group engagement, regional activities, career networking, and student and young alumni outreach. Aligns efforts with the strategies and metrics outlined in the campus-wide alumni engagement plan. Collaborates with the Alumni Relations team to facilitate the planning and execution of initiatives in conjunction with the Berkeley Career Engagement Center, Admissions, Student Affairs, campus-wide academic and administrative units, UDAR Pipeline Development, Consituent Programs, and Major Gifts teams, the Cal Alumni Association, and Cal Athletics to foster a pervasive ethos of sustained philanthropic contribution and ongoing ties to the university community.
- Builds/maintains excellent working relationships with key internal and external partners, typically at the highest level, including arranging meetings, events, campus visits or other opportunities to showcase the institution and serving as a strong advocate for institutional goals and objectives.
- Works closely with senior campus administration, the Chief Alumni Officer, the Executive Director of the Cal Alumni Association, and other relevant contacts to develop and implement effective strategic plans that promote, advocate for, and highlight achievements, activities, and programs of the campus. Oversees the evaluation of the campus-wide alumni engagement plan.
- Selects, trains, leads, directs, and motivates staff, taking corrective action as necessary, including 4 full-time staff and two student assistants.
- Provides comprehensive analysis administration of a $2 million annual budget.
Required Qualifications
- Strong, thorough and in-depth knowledge of the campus and/or medical center, including short and long range strategic plans, vision, goals, objectives, infrastructure, programs, achievements and awards.
- Strong comprehensive knowledge of relevant alumni and other key constituencies including their composition and primary goals/objectives.
- Strong knowledge of management principles, including personnel and budget administration and advanced skill in implementing effective personnel and budget operations and practices.
- Strong written, verbal, interpersonal communication and leadership skills, including attentive listening, and the skill to think quickly and respond appropriately.
- Strong skills in advocating for and representing the institution to its various publics.
- Strong analytical, negotiation and political acumen skills.

- Leadership/management skills, including skills to lead, direct, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $143,000 - $153,000, commensurate with experience.
- This is a full-time exempt, monthly paid position, eligible for full UC benefits.
- This is a hybrid position, eligible for 80% remote capability. This is a California-based position.
