Position Summary

The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month fixed term Assistant Professor Instructor position, with a 90% teaching and 10% service assignment. The position will have an initial appointment of 2 years and will be annually renewed depending on positive performance reviews and availability of funding. The successful candidate will join a dynamic community with faculty, post-doctorates and students who engage in departmental and campus-wide programs, and span broad expertise in natural resources management and ecology. Our department is committed to high quality education and the well-being of our students. We teach courses for FW majors (about 200 total), majors in other natural resources/ecological science fields, and non-science majors. The Department seeks individuals trained in areas including but not limited to: (a) animal population sampling techniques, quantitative analysis and conservation, and (b) community and ecosystem ecology and management. The 90% teaching assignment generally corresponds to teaching three, 3-credit courses per semester, with adjustments based on student contact hours (i.e., courses with large enrollment or multiple labs weigh heavier in the calculation). The position start date will be August 15, 2024, but the successful candidate will be hired as a temporary instructor (at the same pay rate) starting July 1, 2024 (to prepare course materials for the Fall 2024 semester). The Department has immediate or near-term teaching needs in Fundamentals of Fisheries and Wildlife Ecology and Management Lab (FW 101L) and Integrative Studies in Biological or Physical sciences (a science service class; e.g., ISP 217), and depending on faculty expertise Wildlife Population Analysis (FW 424), Wildlife Research and Management Techniques (FW 413), Fish Population Analysis and Management (FW 479), Limnology (FW 472), Marine Biology, and a new capstone course for our undergraduate majors. Expertise in both terrestrial and aquatic/marine biota and ecosystems is not required but would be highly desired. Overall, we seek a colleague who will:

• Foster an inclusive and welcoming lecture and laboratory classroom that respects the diverse backgrounds and experiences of students.
• Develop and implement effective teaching strategies that engage students and support their learning and understanding of course concepts.
• Collaborate in the development and improvement of student-centered curricular resources.
• Participate in departmental meetings, student mentoring, and other academic and administrative activities as required.

Minimum Requirements

An earned Ph.D. in wildlife, fisheries, limnology, ecology, zoology, or a closely related field. An interest in teaching mostly undergraduate students, in continually improving teaching approaches, and in effectively incorporating experiential learning opportunities. Must be committed to advancing MSUs commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Masters for Instructor level.

Desired Qualifications

A demonstrated record of effective and inclusive teaching, and interest in university or professional service. Experience or interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
