Overview The Histotechnologist performs procedures in the Histology department according to established protocols and standard operating procedures. The Histotechnologist is required to follow all quality control and quality assurance guidelines established in the department to include accurate performance, review and documentation. The Histotechnologist is responsible for preparing and maintaining all equipment within their daily workflow including preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and documentation. The position maintains adequate stock and efficient use of supplies for all duties including supply inventory and supply request. The Histotechnologist will perform required activities (including Proficiency Testing) and complete appropriate documentation to meet regulatory requirement to ensure department is maintaining accreditation with all regulatory agencies. This position has the responsibility to recognize and report variances, providing their resolutions, and identifying and reporting suspected non-compliance to management.
What you will do - Performs accurate and quality embedding and microtomy techniques at or above established department productivity standards (blocks/hour).
- For CLIA qualified personnel, assists with accurate and quality grossing and dictation of gross descriptions of small surgical/biopsy specimens at or above established department productivity standards (blocks/hour).
- Prepares and maintains equipment for all types of tissue processing, embedding, microtomy and staining including but not limited to preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and documentation.
- Performs case assembly and slide delivery in a timely manner to the pathologists or testing PA.
- Maintains adequate stock and efficient use of supplies necessary for performing all procedures and preparation of reagents as required. Assists in inventory of supplies and submits needed requests in a timely manner to maintain an adequate supply.
- Performs other duties including but not limited to validating and preparing IHC/Special Stain control blocks and slides, lot-to-lot verification and documentation for antibodies and reagents, digital scanning of slides for quantitative stain analysis and any other duties as assigned.
- Assists with training of new staff and students.
- Demonstrates understanding and knowledge of the technology systems necessary for department operations through the accurate performance of assigned job duties to ensure quality patient care. Recognizes, fixes and reports corrections/variances consistently to improve laboratory operations.
- Performs required activities (including Proficiency Testing) and completes appropriate documentation to meet regulatory requirement to ensure department is maintaining accreditation with the College of American Pathologist (CAP), DNV and other regulatory agency standards (as required) within the department.
- Maintains a safe environment, such as wearing appropriate protective equipment and using proper body mechanics, by following and complying with all Riverside Health System policies, OSHA, privacy and security of health information (PHI) and other regulatory agency requirements that support the National Patient Safety Goals and Quality Initiatives. Recognizes and reports variances, providing their resolutions, and identifies and reports suspected non-compliance to management.
Qualifications Education - Bachelors Degree, Clinical Lab Sciences or equivalent (Preferred)
Experience - 1-3 years Recent relevant experience (Preferred)
Licenses and Certifications - Histotechnologist (HLT) - The ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) Upon Hire(Required)
