Job description
Summary
This position will join the Information Technology Services (ITS) Information Security Team's on-call rotation to receive, analyze, and respond to security alerts from our intrusion detection systems. This position will also be responsible for handling security incidents when they are reported or discovered. The incumbent in this role will also be responsible for performing infrastructure vulnerability assessments and working with stakeholders in other departments to remediate critical computer security issues. This position will create and publish hardening guidelines for new devices added to our campus network.
ITS provides core computing, network services, enterprise systems, and information security resources to the students, faculty and staff of Iowa State University. ITS partners with IT professionals from around campus to provide more specialized IT resources to ISU's academic and business units.
The ideal candidate will be a strong problem solver and have good communication skills. The ideal candidate will also be technically-minded with the ability to work in collaboration with both campus technology professionals and end users.
Example of Duties
• Researches attempted or successful efforts to compromise systems security and design countermeasures.
• Maintains hardware, software, and network firewalls and encryption protocols.
• Conducts accurate evaluation of the level of security required.
• Assists with monitoring, evaluating, and mitigating network security threats.
• Performs security control scripting, assessment, and analysis.
Required Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Security, or closely related field
• Basic understanding of common phishing techniques
• Basic understanding of system hacking techniques
• Basic understanding of networking and routing
• Intermediate understanding of endpoint and server operating systems
• Demonstrated ability to install, configure and use open source and/or commercial security tools
• Demonstrated ability to administer network security technologies
• Demonstrated ability to use a ticket system to manage work
• Demonstrated ability to use a vulnerability scanner
• Demonstrated ability to determine what patches are necessary on a server and how to install them
• Demonstrated ability to educate non-security professionals on cyber risks
• Demonstrated ability to use penetration testing tools for brute forcing logins
• Demonstrated ability to use penetration testing tools for cracking wireless network encryption
• Demonstrated ability to use penetration testing tools for exploiting web app security vulnerabilities
• Demonstrated ability to use a scripting language to automate a repetitive task
• Ability to search logs using open source and commercial tools
• Ability to keep incident information and forensic data confidential.
