Job Description Summary
Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Medical Director in the field of Rehabilitation Medicine to join our dedicated team at Alexian Brother's Medical Center, a 72-bed free standing rehabilitation hospital. In this dynamic role, you will play a pivotal part in delivering exceptional patient care and advancing the field of rehabilitation medicine in our partnership Alliance. You will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of experts to provide comprehensive care to patients, develop personalized treatment plans, and contribute to the advancement of medical knowledge through research and education.
The Medical Director, Alliance is accountable for meeting established Shirley Ryan AbilityLab standards for overall quality, patient care practices, budgetary performance and regulatory compliance. This responsibility includes oversight of the Program physicians and the clinical team.
Functions as an Shirley Ryan AbilityLab attending physician.
Shares responsibility with Program Clinical and Administrative Managers for planning, developing, implementing and evaluating Program operations including managing patient volumes and the annual budget.

Job Description
VISION:
- Has a strong vision for the Program. This vision is consistent with and complementary to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Vision, which includes the integration of science/research where possible within the clinical milieu. The Medical Director must convey passion for building the programmatic vision and will also be able to articulate and communicate the vision broadly.
QUALITY:
- Oversight of and responsibility for the Programs clinical quality, team process, medical practice, patient safety, outcomes, and satisfaction. Ensures an effective and safe environment of care.
- Advocates an evidenced-based scientific approach to patient care delivery.
- Implements a leadership strategy that cultivates a collaborative and professional work environment which stimulates inquiry, the scientific method and continuous improvement.
OPERATIONS:
- Oversees Program operations. Develops and manages the program against a set of clinical, service and financial outcomes that reflect optimal performance and are consistent with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab standards and expectations.
- Directs program strategy and service development including assessment of patient, referrer, managed care/payor expectations. Ensures appropriate structure of the program, development and implementation of clinical protocols, performance standards, and policies.
- Ensures competencies and other specialized skills of physician staff within the program. Directly supervises and appraises physicians and when necessary initiates discipline or termination procedures.
- Recruits, hires, mentors and develops highly qualified staff capable of providing care consistent with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab mission and standards. Provides supervision, evaluates individual group performance and when necessary participates in the determination to discipline or terminate non-physician staff.
- Monitors and achieves desired financial performance of the operating program; develops annual operating budget and manages resources to budget and patient volume.
- Maintains compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Fosters an environment of continuous improvement through use of Continuous Quality Improvement and Lean principles.
MARKETING:
- Participates in marketing analysis and promotional activities and is seen as the external “face” of the program by referral sources, managed care organizations and other key contacts.
PRACTICING PHYSICIAN:
- Collaborates with leaders and staff at host hospital or Shirley Ryan AbilityLab to facilitate achievement of overall organizational goals as appropriate.
- Serves as a practicing physician and provides medical leadership to the interdisciplinary team of physicians, nursing and allied health staff. Is responsible for mentoring and professional development
- In the role of a practicing Physician, ensures the appropriateness and effectiveness of the treatment plan. Oversees and coordinates the involvement of physicians, nursing and allied health staff to resolve complex medical problems.
- Actively participates in assigned medical staff committees at the host hospital including providing leadership by functioning as chairman as appropriate.
- Perform all other duties that are assigned in the interest of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.
Reporting Relationships:
- Reports directly to Chief Medical Officer and Chief Clinical Operating Officer.
- Supervises Program physician staff. Jointly supervises clinical, clerical and support staff.
