A Moment With: Oorah Web Designer

Mrs. S.R.S., Web Designer, shares her experience working at Oorah/Kars4Kids.

(O) What kind of websites do you design?

(SRS) Oorah is a big organization with a diverse range of websites and email campaigns for various programs. I create websites and landing pages, refresh designs, run technical updates, and make sure everything is functioning well so we can reach our audience in the best way possible.

Some examples of the websites we work on are torahmates.org , thezone.org , kars4kids.org , and jewishlittlestar.org . Updating the sites is fun and exciting as I devise and incorporate new and interactive elements on the page based on current design trends and our complementary print media. For example, I work on giving oorahauction.org a new look and feel every year. Things are also always being adjusted based on A/B testing and analytics.

(O) What goes on behind the scenes of the websites we visit online?

(SRS) There is a lot of planning – how it will look and what we want to include. I interact with different departments in the organization to understand what they are trying to convey on the site to meet their needs. I get their input on what makes the target audience tick and what they feel should be included in the content of the website: the main goal, the call to action, and what will attract the audience.

It is important to make sure everything makes sense from the users’ point of view – both the user interface, and the user experience. I also design HTML emails and test and send them through our email provider. This includes event invitations, program recruitment, Oorah news and more. Whatever it is I’m working on, I make sure it is in line with our branding across all our print and web media.

(O) Why do you enjoy working for Oorah/Kars4Kids?

(SRS) Thousands of people view our sites. This makes my work very rewarding. I am not just marketing our programs; I see direct results when people are drawn to our programs and events through our websites and emails. I’m part of what’s happening up close through all the pictures, videos and testimonials.

In addition, at Oorah there isn’t just room for growth, there’s time for it, too. I am encouraged to stay updated on the latest trends and new techniques; to research, keep learning, and gain from those around me. I gain a lot of new skills in this ever-changing field. Whatever knowledge you come in with, you will come out with a whole lot more!

The atmosphere in the office is one of happiness and friendliness. Everyone is always looking to help each other. It is an exciting and fun place to work, plus there are great lunches and an on-site daycare!
