Engineering Operations - Sr Engineer
The Engineering organization is looking to expand its Engineering Operations team. This role reports to the Director of Engineering Operations, Learning & Development and requires a level of technical expertise & knowledge that is typical of a software engineering role. This person will own the maintenance of software tools and applications used in Eng Ops such as onboarding labs in GitHub, GitHub Projects, Actions and google scripting. The person in this role will work on a variety of different things, including maintaining code, developing technical solutions for business challenges, and content development, to name a few. We're looking for someone who is passionate about developing and occasionally teaching fellow engineers on new technologies.
The Engineering Operations team is a small but mighty group. We like to get a lot done, support our key stakeholders in Engineering Leadership and remove the work that feels like multiple paper cuts so they can reinvest their time in other high value work. We sit within the larger Engineering Operations, Learning & Development team, whose mission is to help those in Engineering learn & do their best work.
Scope and Complexity
Setting technical direction, primarily on team
- Determines methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate activities of others
- Recommends product or process improvements based on areas of responsibility
- Works on complex issues where analysis of data is required across multiple dimensions to evaluate options
- Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results and helps others do the same
- Understands how to break big ideas down into simple deliverables that can be shipped quickly to validate assumptions informing future iterations
- Works with key contacts outside own area of expertise
- Influence is strongest on team, but may also be expanding outside of the immediate team
Leadership and Communication
- Fosters a supportive, collaborative culture within the team leading to team growth and greater results
- Improves team functioning: drives improvements in engineering practices and systems
- Provides technical mentorship for team members
- Able to lead discussions (written and verbally) that result in actionable items or decisions being made

Technical Contributions
- Understands and builds for scale working with system maintainability and long term goals in mind
- Strives to reduce complexity
- Provides technical guidance through valuable and detailed code reviews, is a sought after code reviewer
- Leads by example within the team by producing simple, extensible, and maintainable code with few defects
- Finds and fixes classes of defects
- Uses data and insights from customer and production to contribute to technical design and implementation decisions
- Applies metrics to drive the quality and stability of code
- Solves technology challenges impacting product as a whole (demonstrating expertise, aligning to product goals)
- Considers impact of alternatives on technical debt and product supportability
- Chooses the appropriate internal or external technologies, incorporates research, creates designs and validation documents & materials, including test automations that are reused across the teams
Key Qualifications:
- Engineering background
- Able to speak and teach confidently about technical topics
- Facilitation background or desire to facilitate on technical topics
- Stakeholder management
- Cross-functional collaboration
- Excellent verbal & written communication skills
- Technical content development background a plus, though not a requirement
