SUMMARY

The Montgomery County Animal Care and Control Veterinarian is responsible for the operation and supervision of the medical department and clinic. The Veterinarian manages all shelter medicine efforts, performs high volume spay/neuter surgeries, wellness services, and disease control protocols. The veterinarian will serve as the medical director for the facility and work as a key member of the shelter staff and face of the medical department and community.

EXPECTATIONS OF EMPLOYEE

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Include the following. Other duties may be assigned

1. Responsible for medical examinations, care, monitoring, and health of all
domestic animals in the care of MCACC, including foster animals. Provides input
on wildlife/exotic cases if necessary.
2. Oversees the health care of shelter animals, and ensures the maintenance of
accurate and complete animal health records;
3. Performs high volume spay/neuter and other surgeries, dentals, etc. and
manages assistances, techs, etc. in this effort;
4. Diagnoses animal health problems and initiates appropriate treatment;
5. Administers an effective disease prevention program by implementing an
inoculation regime and ensuring effective shelter sanitation and disinfection.
6. Monitors and maintains all preventative healthcare programs;
7. Provides emergency medical advice and treatment to sick or injured animals on a
24-hour on-call basis;
8. Evaluates animals victimized by cruelty and neglect; provides court testimony as
necessary;
9. Oversees, advises, and performs euthanasia
10. Provides animal health information and assistance to those adopting shelter
animals; provides follow-up medical care as appropriate;
11. Responsible for keep and maintaining all medical supplies, medications, and
drugs necessary to provide care for all shelter animals.
12. Maintains appropriate licensing and attends training, meetings, conferences,
workshops, etc. as necessary to maintain job knowledge, skills and required
certifications;
13. Responsible for the maintenance and tracking of shelter drugs and supply
inventory while meeting and maintaining DEA and State of Tennessee
requirements;
14. Provides instruction and leadership of shelter technicians and other staff
assisting with veterinary procedures;
15. Maintains all assigned equipment;
16. Provides recommendations and considerations for the Shelter Director;
17. Will participate as part of the Shelter Management Team in meetings and
discussions;
18. Performs routine administrative/clerical duties as required, including but not
limited to preparing forms, reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving
computer data, copying and filing documents, etc.;
19. Performs other related duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This will be responsible for the operation of the medical and clinic functions of the
shelter to include supervision of medical staff to include veterinary technicians and will
also supervisor the kennel manager and kennel staff in coordination with the medical
department programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential
duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge,

• Ability to use animal control equipment including catch-pole, hypodermic needle,
nets, cat graspers, transfer cages and live animal traps
• Must be able to complete the State of Tennessee Euthanasia Pre-Certification
Course within one year of employment.
• Able to be certified as a State of Tennessee Euthanasia Technician
• Must be an accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and certified through the
State of Tennessee Board of Veterinary Medicine.
• Have the ability to understand and dispense medication dosages in proper format
such as drawing the correct vaccination dosage through a labeled syringe.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates
and the public.
• Must possess or have the ability to possess required DEA licensures and
certifications
• Maintenance of Malpractice insurance (if applicable)
• Minimum of 1-2 years of veterinary experience with emphasis on shelter
medicine and herd health

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS
This position requires effective oral and written communication skills, excellent
interpersonal skills, and basic computer literacy. Requires expert knowledge of the
physical behavior characteristics of dogs, cats, and livestock; humane animal care,
feeding and handling and willing to become certified as a euthanasia technician.

procedure manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from
groups or managers, commissioners and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Incumbent must possess the ability to work with basic mathematical concepts and the
ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to
practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY
Incumbent must possess the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety
of concreate variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Incumbent must possess the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in
written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Incumbent should have the ability to quickly
develop thorough knowledge of leash laws and their application to homeowners; make
decisions within policy guidelines without supervision present; and quickly develop
thorough knowledge of the drugs and drug paraphernalia involved in tranquilizing and
humanely euthanizing animals.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
• Must possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license
• Must obtain State of Tennessee Euthanasia Certification within first year of
employment.
• Must be graduate of Certified College of Veterinary Medicine and have a valid
license to practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of Tennessee
• Must be able to obtain and maintain licensing through the DEA (Drug
Enforcement Agency).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of the job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit and talk
or hear. The incumbent is required to use hands to finger, handle, or fee; reach with
hands and arms. The incumbent is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel,
crouch, crawl, and climb or balance. The incumbent must occasionally lift and/or move
up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and
ability to adjust focus. All other physical demands as outlined in the Animal Control
officer requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is occasionally exposed to outside
weather conditions, animal feces and urine; fumes from cleaning products; and
exposure to parasites (fleas, ticks, mites). Works in office conditions and the animal
shelter; regularly exposed to odors of animals; noise of the impounded animals; disease
communicated by animals; and to the risk of being bitten by an animal. This position
may require work on weekends, holidays, peak times, vacations, and staff illness.
