Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Temporary Research Assistant for the Child Health Institute of New Jersey at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Under the direction of the Associate Professor, the Temp Research Assistant (TRA) will be responsible for the performance and analysis of experiments focused on the genetic causes of congenital muscular dystrophy (CMD) associated with brain malformations and intellectual disability. The project is part of a larger effort in the lab to discover novel disease-causing mutations for CMDs and to develop zebrafish models to screen therapeutic approaches.

The TRA should have a broad (college-level) knowledge of genetics, molecular biology, and biochemistry and ideally some research experience in zebrafish models. The TRA will be responsible for the maintenance and analysis of zebrafish models of CMDs and the performance of drug screenings in collaboration with other lab members. The TRA will also be involved in developing transgenesis approaches in zebrafish and will work closely with the PI and other lab members to allocate tasks and oversee progress.

As part of their professional development to transition to the next phase of their career, the TRA will be trained in improving their experimental design skills and their oral and written presentation skills. Multiple resources for career development to aid with these requirements will be provided by the PI.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

* Use molecular biology and imaging approaches to develop reagents for transient and stable transgenesis in zebrafish mutants.
* Perform microinjections to either knock-down or knock-out genes of interest in zebrafish oocytes.
* Maintain mutant colonies by breeding and genotyping.
* Assist other lab members in drug screening efforts in zebrafish mutants.
* Compile and analyze data with appropriate statistical analysis, conclusions, and future directions in support of further CHI research.
* Adhere to established performance standards and coordination of instrumentation and experimental approaches in support of CHI research.
