Job Description : TechLaw is seeking a Jr-level air chemist/air sampler for our next-level response team in Edison, NJ. The position will support the ) Response Engineering and Analytical Contract (REAC) team- a critical link in our nation's environmental safety support system. REAC teams bring next-level advanced support and respond to national and international incidents involving releases of oil and hazardous materials and to uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. The REAC team has been called upon to conduct environmental analyses in the aftermath of numerous incidents, such as the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001, the Hart Senate Office Building and U.S. Postal Service facilities anthrax threats, and the Space Shuttle Columbia accident. Our scientists and project managers are experts in hydrogeology, geology, chemistry, risk assessment, soil science, sampling and analysis, hazardous waste investigations, remediation, and public outreach who assist the EPA, other government agencies, and commercial clients on various contracts throughout the U.S. This position involves sample collection and analysis of air samples for hazardous chemicals, documentation, equipment maintenance, and field investigation/remediation activities. This position supports other teams with the collection of other media samples (groundwater, surface water, soil, waste, biota, etc) as well.

The ideal candidate should be able to support the following:

  1. Air monitoring using handheld/transportable instruments to gather real-time measurements of volatile organics, inorganics and acid gases; mercury; particulates; chemical agents; and radiation.
  2. Collection of environmental samples from multiple media.
  3. Remote air monitoring and deployment/maintenance.
  4. Performing assessment and interpretation of analytical data from multimedia environmental samples.
  5. Sample and data management.

    Salary Range: $45,000 to $80,000 DOE

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate a variety of air monitoring instruments.
    • Interpret and evaluate data
    • Deploy air monitoring instruments and perform remote monitoring, maintenance and troubleshooting, as needed.
    • Conduct air sampling using a variety of media, including Summa canisters, sorbent tubes, and cartridges. Conduct wipe sampling; soil, groundwater and surface water sampling.
    • Produce and/or review project-related documents, reports and laboratory data.
    • Support emergency preparedness operations and functions, including monitoring and requesting supplies and materials to maintain inventory.

    Required Qualifications:

    • BS degree in meteorology, chemistry or other physical science
    • Experience with basic laboratory and field safety practices
    • At least 21 years of age, with a valid driver's license and safe driving record
    • Proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
    • Good written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, documentation skills, and attention to detail
    • The ability to travel for emergency response (up to 25%) and to be on-call outside of regular work hours

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • 1-5 years of experience in air monitoring and sampling
    • Computers and electronics skills
    • Environmental training (e.g., 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification), familiarity with air monitoring/environmental sample collection devices and maintenance
    • Applicants must be a citizen of the United States of America, or an alien who has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Must have the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
    • Must be able to pass annual medical clearance physicals for field activities and wear a respirator
