Job Description:


Serve as laboratory and field supervisor on a day-to-day basis. Supervise goal-oriented activities of grant-line, undergraduate/graduate student(s), and any OPS employees daily in coordination with the supervisor and, as required, in the absence of the supervisor. Communicate protocols to these employees.

Carry out routine laboratory procedures, including, but not limited to a) weed seed germination biology; b) weed seed identification from soil seed banks; c) herbicide retention procedures using spectrophotometric analysis; d) herbicide absorption, translocation, and metabolism using C-14 labelled herbicides.

Participate in conducting field experiments to evaluate various integrated weed management strategies in the Everglades Agricultural Area and other locations. Activities include but are not limited to a) plot establishment for herbicide efficacy, herbicide resistance, herbicide-soil interactions, weed biology, ecology, weed-insect or -disease pathogen interactions, and weed-crop interaction experiments; b) herbicide application; c) experimental plot maintenance; d) evaluation and data collection; d) developing sampling protocols; and e) experimental plot harvesting. Maintenance of Weed Science work areas associated with the program including building 7469. Use of state vehicle required at times.

Participate in conducting greenhouse experiments. Activities include but are not limited to a) establishment of experiments; b) treatment application for herbicide efficacy or herbicide-insecticides or fungicide interaction experiments; c) evaluation and data collection; and d) greenhouse experiment maintenance.

Office productivity activities to include a) data entry for field, laboratory, and greenhouse experiments using Microsoft Office; and b) assistance with preparation of extension documents and research summaries.

Assist in preparation and during extension-related activities including on-farm visits, training programs and grower field days. Significant contact with clientele is expected.

As workload demands, perform other related duties as required or assigned, incidental to the work described herein, and assist with other work at EREC as needed and determined by the supervisor.


Expected Salary:


$20 - $21 hourly; commensurate with skills and experience


Minimum Requirements:


Bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related life science field.


Preferred Qualifications:


Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization (agronomy or plant biology). Prior experience in agronomic row crops, agrochemicals, conducting field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments preferred.

Computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet, statistical software) required. Efficient communication skills (both oral and written) are necessary.
