Objectives Driver is responsible for operating the demand-response and shuttle bus operations of the Knox Area Transit to meet the needs of passengers and contract agencies in a safe and professional manner. The Driver is also responsible for the collection and recording of fares and passenger counts, and to provide for the safety of KAT passengers. The Driver reports directly to the Dispatcher on a daily basis for day-to-day ride information and direction. The Operations Manager is the direct supervisor of the Driver positions.
Essential Functions Operate vehicles: - Retrieve work orders and route for day;
- Follow specific pick-up and drop-off routes on daily basis;
- Visually ensure passengers are seated and ready to travel;
- Drive shuttle bus to pick up and drop off passengers;
- Safely operate transit vehicles carrying passengers in mixed traffic and in severe weather, maintaining compliance with all traffic laws and applicable DOT, Federal, State, local system regulations and policies;
Perform pre-trip inspections: - Check tire pressure to ensure tires are full and safe for travel;
- Perform general area and truck cleaning tasks;
- Perform preventative maintenance, including the following: Check fluid levels and hoses, Check all lights, signals, etc.;
- Manually check standard brake systems;
- Report any vehicle issues and needs for repairs to mechanic;
- Advise dispatchers of scheduling changes or pertinent information regarding future rides;
- Maintain driver manifest records including rides, cancellations, no-shows, and same day add-ons;
- Keep accurate records, including logs of all passenger counts by type, pass sales, paratransit trips;
- Pump gas and keep records of fuel receipts;
Mobility device loading (Mobility Device can be a wheelchair, scooter, walker, or any device that assists the movement of an individual): - Loading mobility devices to assist passengers;
- Open side wheelchair door utilizing hand held device;
- Guide mobility devices and push into mobility device lift area to get into vehicle;
- Pull passengers in mobility devices backwards to get onto lift;
- Manually pull passengers in mobility devices exerting approximately 25-35 lbs. of force;
- Manually pull passengers in mobility devices exerting approximately 10-20 lbs. of force;
- Walk back into vehicle and fasten mobility devices to vehicle belts and harnesses;
- Ensure straps are fastened and fully secure;
- Utilize hand held remote device to move ramp back into vehicle;
Perform Passenger Assistance tasks: - Assist passengers walking from origin door to destination door as needed;
- Assist passengers to a sitting or standing position in the vehicle;
- Assist passengers with safety devices as necessary;
- Assist passengers in an emergency situation as necessary.
Perform post-trip inspection: - Maintain appearance of the vehicle to ensure cleanliness;
- Sweep debris, clean up any spills, and remove any trash or items left by passengers;
- Sanitize the interior regularly to ensure optimal cleanliness;
- Conduct visual inventories of vehicle equipment, supplies, and restock items as needed;
- Perform preventative maintenance, including the following: Check fluid levels and hoses, Check all lights, signals, etc.;
- Manually check standard brake systems; and
- Report any vehicle issues and needs for repairs to mechanic.
- Performs related non-essential functions as needed.
Job Standards - High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Must meet and maintain all required licenses and certifications as a continued condition of employment.
Supplemental Information This position is part-time, up to 25 hours per week (evenings and weekends) classified, non-bargaining unit.
Shifts operate on a varied work schedule dependent on business need.
