Job description
Min Rate = $19.02 / Max Rate = $27.58 *Placement is in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Units Agreement.
Performs technical, non-testing procedures in support of the various Laboratory sections. Some assignments may require autopsy assistant and/or phlebotomy duties.
Specimen Processing Skill Set
- Accepts drop-off specimens from outpatients and physician offices.
- Performs computer requisition entry for requested lab testing.
- Performs initial specimen processing to include spinning down blood in a centrifuge and distribution of specimens as indicated by tests ordered and priority status. Packages and transmits specimens to reference labs for testing.
- Performs maintenance and troubleshooting for equipment in the specimen processing area.
- Transports lab reports and specimens to and from outreach locations.
- Collects urine drug screens when necessary.
- Receives, aliquots and accessions specimens for clinical testing. Inpatient and Outpatient.
- Prepares and maintains inventory supplies.
- Performs clerical duties such as filing, responding to phone inquiries and requesting computer reports, such as worksheets.
- Performs light housekeeping duties to include, but not limited to, washing glassware, cleaning cupboards and drawers, defrosting/cleaning freezers and refrigerators, emptying red bag waste.
- Completes specimen transport logs, receiving all specimens. Documents time and date of receipt, phlebotomy workload and phlebotomy code.
- Other duties as assigned.
- A high school diploma is required.
- Some assignments require ability to lift 60 lbs. of dead weight and move objects weighing up to 200 lbs.
- Experience with or ability to learn operation of minor Laboratory equipment such as analytical balance, autoclave, water distiller/deionizer, pipette washer and centrifuge.
- Candidate will have computer and keyboarding skills, understand medical terminology and demonstrate customer service ability.
- Good data entry skills required.
- Previous experience as a Laboratory Clinical Assistant, Laboratory Clerk III, Laboratory Clerk IV, or Donor Phlebotomists preferred. Other Clinical Assistants will be considered next if no applicants from prior group.
- Minimum of six months (1040 hours) of professional experience with venipuncture to obtain specimens for analysis as a function, or completion of a phlebotomy training course with certificate preferred .
- Must complete competency/rotations through Specimen Processing skill set .
