Job description
The Department of Public Service (PSD) is seeking a Consumer Affairs & Public Information Specialist III. The Specialist will respond to inquiries and research or investigate complaints about utility matters from Vermont consumers.
Accurate recordkeeping skills are essential for tracking emerging trends and systemic problems. The incumbent will monitor utility service quality. They may draft testimony, produce affidavits of facts, and appear at Public Utility Commission hearings as an expert witness. This position requires excellent writing skills including the ability to research, draft and edit press releases, pamphlets, website and other written or printed materials. Website skills and experience desired. The Specialist may provide training about utility rules and regulations for utility staff, human service providers and consumer advocates. Remote work is possible.

Duties are performed in both office and field settings. Considerable amounts of telephone work and writing are required. Work often involves interaction with people who are angry or in crisis. Some attendance at public meetings is required, for which evening and overtime work may be necessary. Private means of transportation may be required for necessary travel.
Bachelor’s degree or higher in social work, consumer affairs, public administration or related field.
OR
Three (3) or more years of experience in advocacy, mediation, negotiation, or conflict resolution INCLUDING experience with Excel and/or other computer software to manage information.
Master’s degree or higher in social work or related field.
