Job description
Min Rate = $62.46 / Max Rate = $64.96 *Placement is in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Units Agreement.
The Perioperative Surgical Physician’s Assistant (PA) will provide surgical assistance as part of a pool of surgical assistants including Physician Assistants and Registered Nurse First Assistants and may also be assigned other patient-specific care within the scope of granted privileges, to include but not limited to Physician’s offices, inptatient floors and Emergency Department. The PA will report to and take direction as to work hours, patient care assignments and non patient-specific duties from the Director of Perioperative Services. When involved in patient specific care, the PA will be under the direct supervision of the surgeon of record for the patient. This position may involve participation in a call rotation for after hours surgery assistance.
On-call as scheduled. *WAIVER REQUIRED
- Completes accurate and necessary history and physical examination to assure assessment of patient condition and needs.
- Initiates and document appropriate treatment plan.
- Demonstrates ability to perform the following procedures:
- Suturing
- Incision and drainage
- Suture removal
- Wound care/debridement
- Defibrillation
- Arterial blood draws
- Ordering/administration of oxygen
- Administering emergency medication
- Administering intravenous fluids or blood transfusions
- Inserting nasogastric tubes and maintaining suction decompression of stomach.
- Removing swan-ganz catheters, arterial lines, chest catheters and tubes, CVP lines and other invasive lines as requested.
- Obtaining written consents for surgical procedures and research protocols.
- Performing venous and arterial puncture for obtaining samples and for administering medications prescribed by attending physician
- Demonstrates a knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology and operative technique through observable behaviors such as:
- Handling tissue
- Instrument selection and use
- Suturing skills
- Providing hemostasis
- Providing operative exposure
- Inserts tubes
- Maintains a high level of professionalism technically and personally, and works harmoniously as a member of the operative team.
- Practices in collaboration with and at the direction of the surgeon during the perioperative phase.
- Communicates Physician Assistant duty assignments as scheduled in advance for surgical case needs coordination.
- Dictates operative report, writes post-op orders and performs rounding as requested.
- In the operating room, the physician assistant shall perform multi-specialty first assisting.
- Maintains effective consultation and collaboration with Medical Staff.
- Participates in departmental/hospital committees as requested.
- Participates in departmental/hospital-wide quality improvement program
- Completes medical record documentation in a timely manner.
- Assumes on call and rotation schedules as required to meet patient care and staffing needs.
- Maintains working knowledge of the various stages of growth development and health status of these wide populations. Utilized appropriate resources.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the Scope of Practice for Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioners in New York State; CVPH Medical Staff Bylaws, Emergency Care Center Policies, Protocols, Procedures and Standards of medical practice.
- Regularly attends department meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Eligible for licensure in NYS as a Certified Physician Assistant.
- Three (3) years of clinical experience providing direct patient care is required. Clinical experience as a Certified Physician Assistant is preferred.
- ACLS required.
- Experience as a surgical physician assistant will be considered first.
As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
