Tenure-track Faculty Position

Assistant Professor

Full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of St. John's University.

Department Information

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers several programs: BS and BA in Mathematics, BS in Computing and Machine Learning, BS in Financial Mathematics, MA in Applied Mathematics, Computing, and Machine Learning, and MS in Computational Biology and Biostatistics.

Many of our faculty use our convenient location to participate in the numerous seminars in the area via public transportation, such as at NYU, Columbia University, the CUNY Graduate Center, and the Simons Foundation. You can find information about our faculty and their research interests here.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include (1) High-quality teaching on all levels: graduate, undergraduate, and service courses; (2) Maintaining an active research program, including publishing in reputable journals and presenting at conferences; (3) Participating in curriculum and program development; (4) Advising/mentoring students and supervising student research projects.

The standard teaching load at St. John's is 9 credits (3 courses) each semester. Each year faculty can apply for a reduction in their teaching load to 6 credits (2 courses) each semester for intensive research and scholarship. The first year of this position automatically comes with a reduced teaching load of 6 credits (2 courses) each semester.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Theoretical Computer Science. Candidates for this position must show evidence of high-quality teaching in areas belonging to our department's needs (see the list of programs above), and they must show evidence of strong research potential in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Theoretical Computer Science. Applicants with postdoctoral experience in both research and teaching are preferred. The Department is eager to attract candidates representing the rich diversity of the students and communities we proudly serve in the New York Metropolitan area. In addition, we seek candidates who, through their research, teaching, and service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.

  5. A document containing names and contact information for at least three references, one of whom should be able to evaluate teaching of the candidate.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $80,000 - $83,000. St. John's University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
