Position Description
This UAW-represented position includes:
Inspects weldments as well as cast and machined surfaces for weld, surface, and machining defects using a variety of visual, dimensional, and non - destructive procedures and tests. Identifies defects and initiates required documentation related to such defects.
Visually examines:
- Armor castings, armor plate and aluminum components (e.g., hulls, turrets, turret platforms, etc.) to determine compliance with required quality standards;
- Machined surfaces and/or castings for rust, protective coatings, plugged machined holes, scratches, burns, excessive weld splatter, center line locations, excess paint and other defects; and
- Welds (e.g., attaching appurtenances to hulls, turrets, etc.) for cracks, improper fusion, excessive weld splatter, etc.
- Performs dimensional inspection of machined parts utilizing templates, gauges, micrometers, verniers , and other measuring devices.
- Utilizes non - destructive testing methods (e.g., dye penetrants, magnaflux , ultrasonic inspection equipment for checking laminations and thickness, etc.) to supplement visual examinations of welds and castings.
- Identifies defects and initiates required documentation related to defects such as check sheets, deficiency sheets, and other rejection documents.
- Monitors rework / repair operations to ensure defects are repaired and repairs comply with establis hed requirements and standards.
- Performs other related duties as required including:
? Stamping control numbers on components for tracking purposes;
? Affixing inspection stamps as required; and
? Initiating inspection travelers and move tickets.
- Application of this classification is restricted to employees who successfully complete formal training programs and meet related test requirements where such programs and tests are required and / or who have demonstrated ability to:
- Weld armor castings, armor plate and other ferrous and non-ferrous metals and understand and compensate for effects of welding on such metals;
- Recognize weld defects resulting from improper welding amperage, temperature and other related factors; and perform non - destructive testing of components and welds utilizing dye penetrants, magnaflux , ultrasonic inspection equipment (for lamination and thickness tests, etc.).
- Clean up his/her immediate work area. Under exceptional circumstances, may be assigned to perform general cleaning in the department area.
- Pre and / or post operation and safety checks of equipment
- May be required to verify that he has followed his written instructions. These instructions may include the appropriate operation sheets or quality assurance directives.
- Perform administrative tasks relating to the classification.
Position Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must successfully complete vetting process administered by Department of Army Police for unescorted facility access.
- Must be at least 18 years of age and have high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Must successfully complete pre-employment process including but may not be limited to background check, medical exam, and drug screen.
- Must be able to obtain/maintain secret security clearance.
- Must successfully complete formal training programs and meet test requirements, including but not limited to demonstrating ability to weld armor castings, weld armor plate and other ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
- Must be able to lift/carry a maximum of 60 lbs.
- Climbing ladders.
- Walking and standing on uneven surfaces.
- Must be able to crawl, bend, kneel, stand, stoop, twist, sit, and stand.
- Must be willing to work overtime as required.
- Must be willing / able to work off shifts.
Work Environment:
- Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and handling various parts up to 60 lbs.
- Climbing ladders both into and onto structures.
- Bending, kneeling, standing, stooping, crawling.
- Potential for walking and standing on uneven surfaces.
- Working in and around dust, fumes, oils, mists, lubricants, solvents and in areas with a high noise volume.
- Using hand tools including, but not limited to sledge hammer, pry bar, large wrenches, air/gas couplings.
- Operating radio-controlled crane for lifting and moving material.
- Overtime and off-shift work may be required.
- Wearing of required PPE (personal protective equipment) is mandatory.
- Previously passed JSMC Weld Entrance Exam preferred
