Electric Boat Corporation (EB) is seeking a Test Engineer for the Availability Support Group within Planning Yard Fleet Support Engineering, Department 495, to serve in a full time position supporting U.S. Navy commissioned submarines during intermediate level and other maintenance availabilities.
Department 495 is responsible for non-nuclear technical support for commissioned VIRGINIA, OHIO, and SEAWOLF Class submarines. The Availability Support Group is responsible for supporting these three classes of submarines at multiple remote sites during maintenance periods in areas of drawing, engineering, and material support, certification, and configuration management.
The Availability Support Group Test Engineer will be primarily responsible for supporting Norfolk Naval Shipyards (NNSY) Fleet Maintenance Submarines (FMB) department with the coordination of engineering reviews, material acquisition, planning, and logistics for VIRGINIA Class Submarines during maintenance activities. This is a permanent on-site position located at Naval Station Norfolk in Norfolk, VA.
The individual selected for this position will be responsible for:
- Providing onsite technical support responding to FMB inquiries regarding drawings, ship specifications, material requirements, and modernization guidance.
- Routinely visiting VIRGINIA Class Squadron 6 submarines pier side at Naval Station Norfolk to interact with NNSY and Navy personnel about technical or material needs.
- Providing material acquisition support to the FMB and coordinate with EB material departments.
- Attending NNSY FMB availability project meetings and address actions as needed.
- Planning and coordinating with EBs Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) for on-site and remote support during intermediate maintenance availabilities or emergent events.
- Assisting with Liaison Action Record (LAR) requests from FMB.
- Acting as liaison between NNSYs FMB department and SMEs.
- Coordinating badging and access requests for EB personnel to Naval Station Norfolk.
- Supporting occasional evening and weekend work to support emergent fleet needs.
Success in this environment requires that every task be accomplished with a collaborative, hands-on, proactive, deadline-driven, technically rigorous approach. Special Emphasis Programs and Limited Radiation Worker qualifications may be required for certain tasks.
Responsibilities - Must be able to professionally represent EB when interacting with US Navy personnel and industry partners with integrity and commitment to excellence.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and technical information.
- Must be highly motivated and be able to interact easily with others.
- Must be able to function both independently and within a team environment, and be able to facilitate internal and external team meetings with self-sufficiency.
- Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be willing and physically able to climb steep stairs and ladders, ascend/descend scaffolding, and access confined spaces within a submarine.
- Flexibility to perform duties that may be assigned outside of routine activities.
- Proficient in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Demonstrated ability in multi-tasking and technical project management.
Qualifications Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 5 plus years of related experience with US Navy submarine construction, overhaul and repair, and/or operations.
- Prior experience in a supervisory role, team lead, or project management.
- Active DoD Secret Security Clearance or ability to be granted and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.
- Internal candidates must be from organizations outside of Operations (Casciano/Gabriel).
Preferred:
- Associates Degree or higher in science, engineering, or marine technology related fields.
- 7 plus years of relevant experience in US Navy submarine construction, submarine overhaul and repair, and/or submarine operations.
- Specific VIRGINIA Class shipboard experience as a RPPO, Work Center Supervisor, 3-M Coordinator, or in a fleet maintainer role.
- Strong foundational understanding of shipboard systems.
- Experience with EB and US Navy drawing and configuration management databases.
- Ability to interpret technical manuals, military specifications, and ship specifications.
- Proficiency interfacing and presenting to NAVSEA, US Navy officers, and/or government stakeholders.
