Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Pontiac on a full-time basis.

The Role

The GM Motorsports Lab Systems Engineer supports engine, electric motor, and hybrid systems dynamometer testing for our Racing, Performance Parts, and Electrification teams. The Lab Systems Engineer is the SME for all PUMA/hardware interfaces and ensures that all support equipment (both portable and installed in the cell) is integrated, functional, and ready to support testing.

As the Lab Systems Engineer, you will report to the Group Leader of the GM Racing Dyno/I&E Team and work closely with all Dyno Team Members to ensure all tests are executed successfully across (7) Test Cells. You will collaborate with the Dyno Systems Engineer and Group Leader in the test planning phase to ensure readiness from both a software and equipment standpoint. While tests are progressing, you will closely monitor performance to ensure proper system function and anticipate/mitigate potential issues and provide technical and troubleshooting direction to the Dyno Team. Your job will contain very little routine work and involve frequent decisions on priorities and approaches to problem solving. You will also interact routinely with other multi-functional teams within the organization and may work with supplier companies or service agencies.

The successful Racing Lab Systems Engineer understands the purpose, function, and interaction of all test cell controls and equipment as well as the performance goals of the tests at-hand, works collaboratively and positively with their peers, ensures the quality and integrity of all data, and always strives to WIN!

What You’ll Do

Champion safety for themselves and others in all aspects of the work

Act as a subject matter expert in automated testing and provide troubleshooting support pertaining to the integration of test scripts to lab equipment and the UUT

PUMA loadset management and updates for (7) test cells

Indicom setup and xpa management

ETAS, Bosch MS, Holley to Puma Communications

CAN/Ethernet communication and configuration

MCD3 hardware & Functionality

PUMA POI Management and Support

Data Correlation and Interpretation with Concerto

Ensure test data generation, delivery, and storage methods are appropriate to meet or exceed quality standards and stakeholder expectations

Collect, review, and validate testing data for accuracy and quality

Support Project Engineer in Test/Automation/Electrification upgrade integration planning

Interface with engineers on updates to new testing procedures, equipment, and methods.

Work closely with Instrumentation & Equipment team to manage test equipment inventory, calibration, spare parts, and preventive maintenance

New equipment research and procurement following technology and industry enhancements

Regular interaction with AVL Racing support teams for maintenance, diagnostics, and annual test cell PM

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

Associate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math

5+ years of post-graduate engineering experience

High level of proficiency with AVL PUMA

In-depth understanding of dynamometer test automation for both ICE and E-motor as well as performance optimization

Analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills

Experienced in instrumentation and diagnostics in a dynamometer test cell

Problem solving and analytical skills

Understanding of engineering theory and principles of design

Strong written and oral communication skills

Aptitude in Microsoft applications

Ability to work in a team setting and independently

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Computer Science

Prior experience in Process or Lab Systems Engineering in a Dynamometer Lab environment.

GM Global High Voltage Labs “2L” certification

Direct experience supporting electric motor testing

Mechanical/fabrication skills

Prior Racing or Performance experience
