Job Summary
Under the supervision of a pharmacist, assist with or perform tasks so that pharmacists may focus on improving patient care and therapeutic outcomes. Responsibilities • Basic order entry of physician orders into the pharmacy computer system. • Prepares patient specific medication orders for dispensing, utilizing equipment and automation the department has to support the process. Medications are prepared using appropriate medication doses, routes of administration and dosage forms. • Re-package and label unit doses from a bulk supply of medication and accurately complete quality documentation associated with the process. • Where applicable, prepare sterile products utilizing appropriate sterile technique. • Handle, store and deliver medications and other chemicals providing due consideration to their chemical and physical properties. • Delivers medication via 24-hour cart exchange when applicable. • Restocks automated dispensing cabinets and prepares and delivers floor stock orders where applicable. • Demonstrate appropriate telephone communication skills. • Where applicable, prepare non-sterile products, ointments, creams and solutions (topical, oral, rectal) using appropriate departmental procedures. • Perform the basic functions of drug purchasing and inventory control defined as inventory re-stock levels, check in medication shipments, retrieve medications from storage areas, billing, filing of invoices and required documentation and record keeping. Participates in inventory control management. • Complete quality monitoring for medications in the department and patient care areas throughout the health-system. • Demonstrate problem solving skills with respect to work-flow and system improvement by working and cooperating with peers. • Where applicable, prepare controlled substance orders for batch delivery to automated cabinets as well as patient specific orders for controlled substances. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Patient Group Knowledge (Only applies to positions with direct patient contact) The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department's identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients. Competency Statement Must demonstrate competency through an initial orientation and ongoing competency validation to independently perform tasks and additional duties as specified in the job description and the unit/department specific competency checklist.
