Title: SUPERVISOR, YOUTH SERVICES
Location: Koelbel Library, Child and Family Library Services - 5955 S Holly St. Centennial, CO 80121
Reports to : Manager, Child and Family Library Services
Position: 40 hours, full-time, exempt
Pay Rate: $60,200 - $75,100
Purpose: Responsible for the District leadership and coordination of daily operations, project management and the supervision of employees on the core Youth Library Services team serving all communities in the Arapahoe Libraries service area. Responsible for overall quality of District youth and family programs, services and initiatives aimed at children (ages 5-12). With a strong emphasis on project management, strategic visioning and effective collaboration, facilitate work for the youth and family service population at a systemic level. Mentors' youth librarians in assessing youth program quality, attendance, library use, and outreach opportunities to ensure that ALD is anticipating youth and family needs in and outside our libraries.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
40% LEADERSHIP AND SUPERVISION
Supervision:
- Recruits, interviews, hires and trains new department staff. Monitors employee learning and course assignments for successful job performance.
- Recommends salary increases, promotions, and transfers.
- Oversees scheduling, timekeeping, and supervision of the department.
- Handles discipline and terminations in accordance with practice.
- Supervises and manages department assignments and priorities.
- Monitors and develops employee performance, including delivering recognition, supporting ongoing professional development and providing constructive and timely evaluations.
- Delegates responsibilities or performs the role of Department employees when back up is needed.
Leadership
- Leads by example.
- Provides ongoing communication and solicits regular input and feedback from staff.
- Provides ongoing input and feedback on organizational direction and initiatives.
- Promotes collaboration and team building.
- Demonstrates enthusiastic leadership and support for change implementation.

- Confidently presents new ideas, and literacy and library information in a clear and engaging manner when working with patrons, colleagues and stakeholders one-on-one or in groups, in formal and informal settings.
- Collaborates to set goals and performance objectives for the District Youth Services Department staff.
- Demonstrate effective leadership skills including responsibility for outcomes, personal productivity, adaptability, critical thinking, active listening, risk taking, interpersonal skills and business ethics.
- Demonstrate effective leadership, delegation skills, and manage multiple responsibilities in an environment of constant change.
- Provides leadership including active listening and communication, conducting regular Department meetings and coordinating and prioritizing assignments.
30% OPERATIONS
- Responsible for daily operations of the Youth Services Department by setting goals, planning and prioritizing work, gathering and communicating information to employees, monitoring and making decisions about Department resource allocation, troubleshooting and offering solutions to workflow challenges.
- Monitors quality and makes recommendations regarding Arapahoe Libraries youth and family spaces, materials, programs, services, messaging and web content provided by the Department.
- Collaborates with stakeholders across the Department and organization to make program scheduling and promotional recommendations.
- Communicates effectively with manager and internal stakeholders within and across departments to facilitate operations changes and support best practices.
30% STRATEGIC PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT
- Facilitates the development, planning, scheduling and implementation of Arapahoe Libraries programs, services and initiatives for children ages 6 -12.
- Compiles and analyzes data and research to assist with decision-making; makes recommendations for new initiatives or solutions to challenges.
- Coordinates a shared vision for youth and family services by promoting collaboration and alignment with various teams from across the organization. This includes but is not limited to the youth and early literacy librarians, branch librarians, summer reading coordinator, and Events.
- Mentors and trains youth librarians to develop training for staff serving youth and families, and system-wide programming for youth, based on analytics, and in partnership with the Learning and Development team, early literacy and branch youth reference librarians.
- Coordinates district-wide youth initiatives and contests, which will necessitate successfully collaborating with varied internal library departments as well as relevant public entities.
- Anticipates challenges due to seasonal workflow, emerging technology and evolving community dynamics.
- Collaborates to set goals and parameters for services to area schools.
- Helps set priorities for adapting to systemic change.
- Advances professional knowledge and networking by presenting and attending professional conferences, and publishing in professional journals or serving on local, state or national library committees.
- Builds and maintains relationships with community stakeholders.
- Collaborates with the early literacy team on family programming and outreach decisions.
- Collaborates across the District to participate in initiatives related to children and families such as Summer Reading, and children's space design. Participates in additional District projects and operational efforts not specific to specialty.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- May contribute to, collaborate and make suggestions for children's collection development.
- May collaborate across departments to support District programs and outreach events.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in the library and information studies field. Or ability to obtain a master's degree in the library and information studies field within three years from the start of the program. An application to the library school must be made within six months of the date of hire.
- Five years of successful professional experience working with children in libraries or education.
- Advanced understanding of childhood learning and development.
- Works effectively with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
- Supervises a remote or hybrid (onsite/remote) team.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with patrons and staff.
- Experience with developing and leading instructional training.
- Experience facilitating and leading meetings.
- Works collaboratively and flexibly in a team environment and across departments throughout the organization.
- Organizes work, determine priorities, handle multiple tasks, complete projects on time, and problem solve.
- Intermediate technology skills with cloud computing, various operating systems (such as Windows, IOS, Android, etc.) Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook, and an ability to learn and apply new technologies.
- Demonstrates initiative, to work independently under tight deadlines and prioritize various projects and requests.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Supervising or managing in a library setting.
- Experience teaching, training or mentoring others.
- Experience with project management and planning.
- Experience with community outreach and engagement with resource agencies.
Work Environment:
- Moderate noise (computers, phones, printers, staff and patron interactions).
- Ability to travel to various libraries and community outreach locations.
- Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends.

- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 75% of the time.

The Arapahoe Library District operates eight branch libraries, including mobile library services, and a library at the County Detention Center, funded by the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department. A seven-member Board of Trustees sets the library budget and determines policy.
