SUMMARY

Intergalactic has designed a program that provides a collaborative and challenging work environment by allowing a student to assist the engineering department with building and testing electrical systems and various other assigned projects.

The Engineering Intern program is designed to last for one semester at a time and is designed to be eligible for course credit. At the end of the program, the student and the supervisor will discuss the possibility of continued employment in coordination with Human Resources.

Interns are encouraged to seek feedback as often as desired. Intergalactic leadership will provide informal feedback on a daily basis, and formal feedback at least twice during the semester.

Expected Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities

• Spend time shadowing and supporting experienced engineers as they perform day-to-day operational assignments.
• Perform assembly of mechanical systems.
• Perform analysis for both completed and future projects, tests, engineering systems, quality systems, system, and production.
• Participate in data analysis, analysis methodology improvement projects, design improvement projects, and trade studies for manufacturer studies.
• Assist in the design and development of future systems.
• Assist with documentation of parts and assemblies.
• Create or modify tool designs.
• Perform root cause analysis and corrective action for non-conformances.
• Maintain production work instructions.
• Supplier management.
• Component or integrated systems test.
• Complete tasks that support larger projects.
• Participate in team-building activities.
• Maintain a clean and orderly work environment, including properly disposing of used chemicals such as oil, solvents, and coolant.
• Keep tools, parts, inventory items, and supplies clean, organized, stocked, and labeled.
• Maintain test and shop equipment.
• Assist engineers in test set-up and tear down. Build or modify test equipment as needed.
• Assist engineers in assembling and testing prototypes and final products.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Expected Hours of Work

Schedule may vary during the hours of Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm around class schedules. Some flexibility in schedule is allowed with prior approval, but dependability is paramount. This position requires at least 10 hours per week as scheduled in advance and is limited to fewer than 30 hours each week.

Supervisory Responsibility

The Mechanical Engineering Acolyte has no direct supervisory responsibility.

Physical Requirements

This role requires sitting, walking, or standing for several hours at a time. This role requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, open cabinets, bend, or stand on a stool as needed.

Work Environment

This job operates in an indoor office environment, as well as a moderately noisy shop environment, and routinely interacts with other crew members and customers. This role routinely uses both paper and electronic record keeping systems and communication equipment.

Travel Requirements

No overnight travel is expected for this position. Infrequent travel to local suppliers, customers, or other locations is expected.

Required Experience and Education

Candidates must be currently enrolled and working to complete a degree in Mechanical Engineering or related major at an accredited university.

Additional Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
