General Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in forensic science, chemistry. Master's degree or PhD preferred. Four years of experience in a forensic science laboratory operating gas chromatography/liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry systems. Preferred experience in Agilent QQQ and Q- TOF , and GC/MS instrumentation. Desirable experience with automated deoxyribonucleic acid ( DNA ) extraction robots, liquid handling platforms, polymerase chain reaction ( PCR ), and capillary electrophoresis instruments. 

Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:

Performs complex managerial responsibilities in directing the daily administrative and operational functions of a laboratory, ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, accuracy, and efficiency in the realms of forensic research and teaching.

Primary Responsibilities (Staff Positions Only):

Manages personnel in labs, scientific equipment, oversees laboratory safety, and implements and maintains laboratory procedures and policies. Develops standard operating procedures for the laboratory. Formulates and implements quality control and quality assurance. Provides a strong leadership to the forensic science team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement. Provides technical assistance to students and professors. Develops and enforces quality control measures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of forensic research. Develops laboratory guidelines and maintains procedures manuals. Trains incoming personnel in proper lab conduct and complex processes. Implements and maintains laboratory accreditations standards and compliance with relevant regulatory requirements. Monitors and evaluates the performance of analytical instruments and equipment. Maintains and calibrates scientific instruments and follows quality control measures to ensure instruments meet required performance standards. Performs problem solving and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment. Oversees laboratory records which includes data for calibrations, instrument service contracts, equipment inventory, and chemical inventory. Complies with all safety standards. Proactively identifies and mitigates safety risks. Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental or organizational budget by reviewing expenditure reports, analyzing financial data and ensuring expenditures are within annual budgetary limits. Collaborates with procurement to acquire equipment and technologies necessary for forensic research. Interprets policies, rules, and regulations and ensures they are followed. Performs other related duties as assigned.
