THE DEPARTMENT

The Office of Research, Innovation & Economic Development assists faculty, staff and students in securing external funding for research and other support services related to research compliance, and innovation for commercialization. The office serves as a central office on campus for support related to any aspect of research and has three main units. First, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) provides assistance to faculty in identifying funding from government agencies, foundations, and corporations, and in proposal planning, development, and final submission. Second, the Office of Research Compliance (ORC) provides support to faculty, staff and students related to all aspects of research compliance including human subject, animal research, export controls (EC), and responsible conduct of research (RCR). Third, the Animal Care Facility provides a state of the art facility for animals used in teaching and research. At any one time, the facility houses 300 mice, 30 rats, and 10 rabbits.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provides administrative assistance to the research compliance office (EC, RCR, IACUC, IRB) and primarily the IRB and IACUC program. As human subjects and animal protocols are submitted through online portals, conducts administrative reviews of the protocols to assist the committees and their chairs with efficient and effective reviews.
• Analyzes protocols for format, compliance with regulations, and policies, and completeness; recommends changes as needed.
• Advises applicants on the use of appropriate forms and applicable regulations.
• Interprets regulations and policies to address the objectives of the protocols application.
• Serves as the primary contact between applicants and the committees during all phases of the protocol review.
• Provides advice and assistance to bring protocols into compliance with review standards. Compiles minutes of IACUC and IRB meetings. Schedules, tracks and facilitates periodic site visits for the IACUC.
• Maintains IACUC and IRB protocol databases.
• Protocols are administered via IMedRIS for animal studies and Cayuse Human Ethics for human studies.
• Ensures that complete records are maintained for each protocol and that regulations have been followed.
• Works to implement new versions and systems as they come online. Analyzes efficiency and recommends changes as appropriate.
• Assures compliance with federal, state, and system regulation through maintaining, revising, and implementing policies, procedures, tracking or training requirements and completions, schedules, and forms to manage the programs.
• Gains and maintains up-to date knowledge of policies and regulations, obtained through professional contacts with agencies such as the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP), US Department of Agriculture (USDA) etc., attendance at conferences and other continuing education avenues.
• Keeps professional relationships with such entities and submits to them required reports. Facilitates periodic site visits for regulatory agencies and the USDA.
• Helps to develop and deliver educational programs, such as workshops webinars etc. for the campus community about animal and human subject research and teaching.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree AND/OR the equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.

Working knowledge of general practices, program, and/or administrative specialty; basic knowledge of and ability to apply fundamental concepts; working knowledge of budget policies and procedures; ability to learn, interpret, and apply a wide variety of policies and procedures relating to and impacting the applicable program, organizational unit, and/or administrative specialty; knowledge of basic methods and procedures for research and statistical analysis and the ability to apply them. Ability to analyze data and make accurate projections using business mathematics and basic statistical techniques; ability to organize and plan work and projects including handling multiple priorities; ability to make independent decisions and exercise sound judgment; ability to compile, write, and present reports related to program or administrative specialty; demonstrated ability establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

• Direct experience in administration of IRB/IACUC or extensive experience working with IRB/IACUC, demonstrating proficiency in managing research compliance processes.
• Thorough knowledge of both the CSU system and Cal Poly Pomona policies and procedures, ensuring adherence to institutional guidelines.
• Familiarity with human subject protection and/or animal care protocols, including experience in developing and submitting relevant research protocols.
• Proficiency in export control regulation and strong presentation skills using Power Point and other multimedia tools, facilitating effective communication of research compliance concepts.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with university stakeholders, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
