Summary
The Treehouse Summer camp at First Roots-Wild Roots Preschool is looking for a lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor for our 5 STAR summer camp. Our camp serves children age 5-8 and the lifeguard is an important part of the team! Responsibilities include preparing materials for group swim lessons and group free swim. The lifeguard, also serving as a counselor, is a positive role model for all children, and assists with other camp counselor responsibilities as needed including basic pool maintenance. Training provided. Camp runs June 19-August 18 with some pre-camp training required during the week of June 12-16. Come spend the summer playing with us!
Duties Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Greet each child (and their caregivers) warmly and with enthusiasm at each lesson, and initiate a goodbye at the end of the day.
- Lead pool activities and lessons with enthusiasm and encourage participation appropriate to the developmental level of the child.
- Clearly differentiate skill levels and expectations according to the age group of the children.
- Enrich children?s group free swim time with activities and games.
- Assist each child with developing swim skill goals to accomplish by the end of their session at the Treehouse Camp.
- Document and distribute each child?s progress and swim levels at the conclusion of each swim lesson session using WSI check-lists. ?Complete and distribute achievement cards or certificates at the conclusion of each swim lesson session.
- Instruct students on the proper use of equipment and supplies.
- Supervise children at all times in all areas of the pool (shallow end, deep end, and poolside).
- When instructing lessons, instructors are to be in the water unless it is appropriate to be on the deck.
- Inspect the pool site and equipment daily and alert the Director to any potential safety hazards.
- Vacuum pool liner and empty pool filters daily.
- Check pool water chemistry daily and adjust accordingly to maintain balanced levels.
- Assist with cleaning up pool areas and materials to ensure that all items are stored appropriately.
- Comply with all Vermont School Age Licensing regulations. Comply with all WAAGS LLC, Treehouse Policies, including policies addressing the Aquatic Policy and Bullying.
Requirements Required Skills and Abilities - Demonstrate excellent rapport with school age children, a sense of humor and an authentic disposition toward helping children learn the joys of swimming, water play, and water safety.
- Display a professional demeanor with all summer counselors, First Roots-Wild Roots' staff and families.
- Have an ability to work both independently and cooperatively with other staff members.
- Be punctual and prepared.
- Have your own transportation.
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- Have current lifeguard certification.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications - High School Diploma, preferably enrolled in a college level program.
- Minimum 2 years (or two summers) experience supervising/lifeguarding children (age 5-12 years).
- Experience leading private or group swim lessons; determining skill levels and documenting progress.
- Experience with in-ground pool maintenance.
- Water Safety Instructor Certification
