THE DEPARTMENT

MEP-WiSE: Center for Gender, Diversity, and Student Excellence, located in the College of Engineering, is a STEM student success center designed to increase the number and diversity of students from historically underrepresented minority, first-generation, low-income backgrounds, including women, who pursue STEM degree programs. With emphasis on reducing the achievement gap for minority students, MEP-WiSE offers a comprehensive retention and graduation success program-including summer bridge, mandatory tutoring, supplemental instruction, peer mentoring, and internships-focusing on improving student academic performance. The mission of the Cal Poly Pomona College of Engineering is to produce well-qualified engineering graduates who are ready for immediate and productive entry into the workforce or for graduate studies. The college provides practice-oriented education based on sound engineering principles and applications while emphasizing teamwork, communication, and creative skills needed to be leaders in a global society. The College of Engineering provides opportunities to more than 5,600 undergraduate and graduate students in seven engineering departments, offering eleven programs leading to Bachelor of Science degrees in Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, Manufacturing, Mechanical, Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology, and Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology. In addition, graduate programs are offered for Master of Science degrees in Engineering (with emphasis in Aerospace Engineering or Materials Engineering), Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management, Mechanical Engineering, and Systems Engineering. The undergraduate curricula are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission or the Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc. (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

STEM Student Success Program

• Implements student recruitment/retention/graduation success activities for MEP-WiSE. Assists with College of Engineering admission yield/recruitment events. Processes applications, admissions/matriculation. Coordinates Summer Orientation registration, MEP-designated EGR100/L section placements, "Engineering/STEM in Your Future" summer bridge, Fall Kick-off, Spring Recognition, and Graduation Banquet. Works with cultural affinity student organizations: American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), National Society of Black Engineers

(NSBE), Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), Society of Women Engineers (SWE)

• Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction. Helps with recruitment/hiring of Tutors and Supplemental Instruction (SI) Facilitators, including onboarding/training of student employees and SI Faculty Coordinators, CPP Connect access. Coordinates Mandatory Tutoring and SI programs, including weekly monitoring and participation enforcement. Leads bi-weekly Tutor/SI meetings. Collects survey data for year-end student success data analysis.

Career Development Program.

• Coordinates professional development workshops (career enrichment, essential skills, study skills) and field trips, including marketing/information dissemination. Collaborates with industry reps (DLB and WiSE Board members) for member engagement. Helps implement MEP-WiSE Peer Mentoring program, including peer mentor recruitment/training.

Data Reporting and Tracking.

• Monitors/tracks student progress and facilitates intervention of students on or approaching probation. Uses a learning management system (Canvas), student information database (BroncoDirect, CPP Connect), and campus Dashboard. Uses various data tools and validated metrics. Collects, consolidates, and formats data for MEP-WiSE semesterly and annual reports. Interprets data to make recommendations for program changes and improvements.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques and the principles of individual and group behavior.
• Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions, and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other programs or service areas.. Services Office.
• Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.
• A master's degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
• Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Must possess excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; high degree of personal motivation, common sense judgment, and persuasiveness; interest in developing leadership, interpersonal, planning, problem-solving, and organizational skills; ability to understand/interpret needs of minorities and women students, economically disadvantaged, first-generation, ethnically diverse groups; ability to relate to stakeholders (educational partners, students, staff/faculty, industry); handle difficult sensitive situations, develop creative solutions, create caring environment with high expectations of individual academic success; possess knowledge of CSU admission, advising policies, procedures/practices; able to communicate aforementioned.
• Must have a record of reliable, consistent, timely work attendance/punctuality.
• Must be flexible as the position may require occasional early morning, evening, and/or weekend hours, including participation in recruitment and retention-related events.
• Proficiency in productivity software applications. Strong working knowledge of PC and related software including, but not limited to, MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access), Email, Internet, and Canvas learning management system; Experience and knowledge with student information systems (e.g., PeopleSoft).
• Ability to drive a personal vehicle on university business, including on the freeway.
• Ability to drive an electric cart on campus.
