Job Title: STEM Engagement & Learning Specialist
FLSA: Exempt, Full-Time (40 hours a week)
Reports to: Director of Programs
Wage Range: $55,000-70,000
Summary
Serving more than 300,000 adults and children each year, the Connecticut Science Center is the state’s premier destination for informal science learning, a top tourist attraction, a hub for teacher training, and one of the state’s foremost resources for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The STEM Engagement & Learning Specialist is part of a dedicated team of educators designing, developing, and implementing high-quality, STEM-related professional learning opportunities for teachers, instructional leaders, and building/district administrators. This position is a member of a larger Programs Team, consisting of educators focused on ensuring that all students have access to high-quality STEM programs and learning opportunities that exemplify best practices in STEM teaching and learning. In collaboration with our STEM Education Team, the STEM Engagement & Learning Specialist provides a unique set of services to schools designed to support the Science Center’s mission and to ensure that students have equitable access to STEM learning opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the classroom and in future careers.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver high-quality, engaging professional learning experiences for PK-12 educators with a focus on student engagement, inquiry, STEM, and in alignment with state standards.
- Design and develop STEM-related workshop offerings that support student-centered learning and high levels of student engagement through hands-on exploration and play-based learning.
- Develop PK-12 curricular materials and resources that demonstrate model exemplar STEM teaching and align with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
- Build, cultivate, and maintain relationships with schools, districts, and additional community-based programs.
- Work with school partners to support educators in the implementation of three-dimensional teaching strategies through workshops, coaching, and other teacher support strategies.
- Analyze evaluation data to provide information on the impact of our programs and inform continuous improvement.
- Support sales and grant writing efforts through brainstorming, data collection, and research activities.
- Develop and facilitate inquiry-based, hands-on STEM programs to a variety of audiences through on-site and off-site programs and other activities for Pre-K to 12th-grade students.
- Collaborate regularly with the STEM Education staff and broader Programs team to design, implement, and facilitate robust STEM learning experiences for schools, students, and organizations that support our mission and improve STEM-learning opportunities for youth.
- Support the STEM Education team in the development, design, and piloting of new student-based STEM programs that align to standards, and model exemplary instructional practices for meaningful STEM Engagement.
- Work with the Programs Management Team to design and provide internal professional learning opportunities for our Education team.
- Work with the broader Programs team to ensure that all offerings, programs, and services support developing the skills and knowledge needed for individuals to be successful and all are created with a diversity of communities, cultures, and needs in mind.
- Support and participate in state, and perhaps national, conferences/events focused on Professional Development and STEM-related topics highlighting Science Center programs and their benefits to the science and education communities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in science and/or education demonstrating a strong foundation and background in STEM education. Additional education is preferred at some level.
- Prior teaching experience in informal learning environments (such as science centers or museums) or formal teaching experience in PK-12 schools.
- Ability to use contemporary best practices used in the teaching and learning of science and the facilitation of professional learning.
- Ability to facilitate adult learning individually or as part of team.
- Experience in creating and teaching inquiry-based, hands-on science programs is preferred.
- Values being a member of a larger cross-functional and intra-departmental team.
- Excellent facilitation and communication skills (oral and written).
- Understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards.
- Ability to work collaboratively with teams and meet deadlines.
- A strong willingness to support diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion efforts for all communities to support equitable engagement and access to STEM learning opportunities.
- Must possess a valid CT driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record to drive to off-site locations.
- Proficient with Google drive and Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends or some holidays as needed.
- Ability to work onsite.
Physical Requirements
- Repetitive movement of hands and fingers – typing and/or writing.
- Occasional standing, walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching and sitting for periods of time.
- Reaching with hands and arms.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to drive a motor vehicle.
