Job description

T he Portland VA Research Foundation (PVARF) is an independent nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation that works to facilitate research and education activities conducted at the VA Portland Healthcare System (VAPORHCS). Since 1989 PVARF has partnered with the VAPORHCS to develop a diverse research portfolio conducting basic, translational, and clinical studies with the goal of improving and enhancing the health and well-being of Veterans.

PVARF is sponsoring summer fellowship opportunities for undergraduate students to gain hands-on experience in laboratories and research activities at the VAPORHCS. In addition to gaining invaluable research experience, pivotal for graduate and medical school applications, students will have the opportunity to meet with scientists from varying disciplines, work with mentors and peers, and apply the scientific method in a real-world setting.

The 2024 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship provides unique research opportunities across a range of research areas. Projects will be under the direction of a Principal Investigator (Mentor) and other team members. This is a 10-week program with 40 hours per week expected. The targeted start date for this year's program is June 5, 2024. Participants will receive a support stipend of $5,500.

Eligibility:

You must possess the minimum qualifications below to be considered for these positions. Individuals who have already graduated from college are not eligible.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Completed at least freshman year of college by June 2024
• Science major or social science major
• GPA 3.5 or above
• Preference to applicants who are residents of Oregon or attend college in Oregon

PVARF looks to provide opportunities for the career development of individuals traditionally underrepresented in the science professions including women and members of the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) community and welcomes applications from these individuals.

Project Opportunities:

Human Data Analytics - projects involving surveys or electronic health record information

• A Sleep Intervention to Improve Rehabilitation in Veterans with TBI
• The Epidemiology of Traumatic Injury among Veterans: Traumatic Brain Injury, Opioid Overdose, Firearm Injury, and Suicide
• Non-pharmacologic interventions to have evidence in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for reducing rates of suicide among veterans
• Public health principles and epidemiologic methods in the field of auditory health among Service members and Veterans
• Evaluation of above knee amputations with and without myodesis to assess impact on patient outcomes

Laboratory Research - projects involving lab-based experiments or analysis of data from such experiments

• Drug development for malaria and toxoplasmosis caused by the eukaryotic parasites, Plasmodium falciparum, and Toxoplasma gondii

• Brain Circuitry of Binge Alcohol Drinking in animal models
• Understanding how Genetic and Environmental Factors Control Autoreactive T Cell Responses that Drive Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)
• Sleep Disturbances and the impact on neurodegenerative processes prominent in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease
• Pre-clinical, translational and clinical studies of venous thrombosis and vascular disease

Candidates who are selected to be interviewed will be notified during the first week of April 2024. Final acceptance into the internship program occurs after the interview and will be no later than April 10, 2024.
