Director of Strategic Initiatives | The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Location

Chapel Hill, NC | United States

Job description

Vacancy ID: NF0007752

Position Summary/Description:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Director of Strategic Initiatives plays a key role in advising the dean and the school's executive leadership team in the development, adoption, and execution of schoolwide strategic initiatives. The director makes sure that those strategic programs are implemented by identifying resources, devising timelines, assigning responsibilities, keeping teams and individuals on track, problem-solving around possible difficulties, evaluating results, and continuously improving processes in ways that help position the school for maximum efficiency and impact.

The director acts to bring together and integrate different departments and key individuals throughout the school, maximizing the use of existing resources (financial, human, material, intellectual) and making sure goals are achieved in a timely and efficient manner.

The director will partner with area experts to facilitate collaborations within the school and with other campus units to ideate and launch new initiatives, handing them off to the responsible departments or individuals once they are well established. The director will also advise the dean and executive leadership team on crisis response strategy and will spearhead the response to emerging needs, ensuring that the school stays aligned with UNC's mission and strategic plan and well as the school's own strategic mission and goals.

The director is a member of the school's executive leadership team and works together with the team, the dean, and the Director of Communications to ensure that key deliverables address the goals of new strategic initiatives and are aligned with the school's overarching strategy. The director is a resource, consultant, thought partner, and problem solver for the dean and other leaders within the school.

The director liaises continuously with faculty, academic and administrative leaders, staff, and students across the school to ensure communication across individual units and to move initiatives and priorities forward on behalf of the dean and other leaders.

This position builds the school's people strengths, working with the dean, senior administrative leaders, and others to help further develop faculty and staff skills and abilities in moving complex projects forward in a matrixed organization; adapting to innovation and change; and advancing our strategic priorities.

This position reports to the Dean and supervises a permanent Events Coordinator.

Education and Experience:

* An advanced degree in business, management, communication, or related fields is highly preferred.
* Demonstrated experience managing and leading a wide range of cross-disciplinary, boundary-spanning projects; setting priorities; communicating across disciplinary boundaries; working effectively with, leading, and mentoring others; and pivoting quickly – and helping others pivot as well – as needed.
* A strong customer orientation and commitment to working collaboratively with individuals from all parts of the school, university and beyond.
* A record of success in managing financial resources.
* Familiarity with SharePoint, Zoom and MS Teams.
