Job Summary:
As an Engineering Manager overseeing the Front-End JavaScript Client SDK Engineering Team, the individual will lead a dynamic group responsible for maintaining a large functional client library while also pushing its boundaries to adapt to change and add new features needed for a suite of production applications. This client library needs to be able to accommodate challenging build and runtime scenarios and run in not only modern web browsers but also modern and legacy browser-based devices such as tv’s and set-top boxes.
The mission is to empower Direct-to-Consumer application developers on those like Disney+, ESPN, and Hulu to more seamlessly interact with the web service ecosystem at Disney and the various interaction patterns our services expose as well as drive new and innovative functionality through these systems. This role involves strategic leadership in designing and architecting the client SDK, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring the team delivers exceptional tooling within the SDK libraries. The Engineering Manager is responsible for guiding the team, championing code quality, and aligning technical efforts with organizational goals and delivering working software efficiently in a fast pasted environment.
Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:
- Lead a small team in designing and architecting the client SDK. Foster cross-organizational cooperation. Provide guidance and direction to team members.
- Oversee code development to enhance applications' interaction with services. Champion code quality through strategic leadership and mentorship.
- Work closely with engineering, product, design, and service teams to define product requirements. Engage in productive technical discussions.
- Apply strategic thinking to identify, resolve, and develop solutions for complex architectural changes. Improving team collaboration, un-blocking developers from external forces, uphold boundaries and create an environment that allows the team to thrive and deliver quality software.
- Oversee project management, ensuring projects align with team goals and organizational timelines.
- Focus on talent development within the team. Foster trust, set goals, offer guidance, and provide constructive feedback.
Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:
- Minimum 8 years of technical experience with at least 2 years of technical and engineering leadership experience.
- Hands-on experience with modern web technologies, including TypeScript and JavaScript.
- Proficiency in integrating with third-party systems (e.g., APIs, Service patterns like GraphQL, Yaml, and REST).
- Strong project management skills, seeing projects through from inception to completion.
- Exceptional emotional intelligence, maintaining composure under high-pressure situations and meeting tight deadlines.
- Effective collaboration and communication skills, able to discuss technical topics clearly and engage in productive technical discussions.
Preferred Qualifications
- In-depth understanding of the JavaScript runtime type system and environment.
- Proven ability to strategize and implement complex technical changes, share knowledge, and gain support for solutions.
- Capability to support and mentor other engineering managers and team members, fostering trust, setting goals, offering guidance, and providing constructive feedback.
Required Education
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field
The hiring range for this position is $172,300.00 to $231,100.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
