Assistant Project Scientist/Eskalen lab

Position Overview:
The salary range for this position is $71,500-$91,000. 'Off-scale salaries', i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.


NATURE AND PURPOSE

The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc.), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will conduct research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE
I. Research: (90%)
The incumbent of this position will be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities through the following roles and duties:
Demonstrated significant, original, and creative contributions to a research or creative program or project: (70%) Incumbent will work on fungal diseases in grapevine, kiwi, pear, apple, persimmon, strawberry, and other tree fruits and small fruits in California, including diseases that annually cause losses and new outbreaks. The research will include etiological studies using modern methods. Specific projects that Incumbent will support include studies on the biology, ecology, and epidemiology of foliar, trunk, and soil-borne diseases of grapevine, kiwi, pear, apple, persimmon, strawberry, and other tree fruits and small fruits. Evaluations of new antimicrobial and induced host resistance materials are components of immediate disease management goals.
Publication: (10%) The incumbent is expected to publish research results in
peer-reviewed journals, books, and other venues such as popular trade
magazines.
Grant acquisition: (10%) The incumbent is expected to assist in the preparation of grant proposals for research funding. In addition, the incumbent will help prepare reports for projects that are funded.
II. Professional competence and activity (10%): The incumbent will continue to present abstracts at scientific meetings and participate in professional disciplinary committees at APS. They will continue engaging students and advising them in my lab's research programs. Incumbent will also promote teamwork, cooperation, and a trustworthy and secure work environment through helpful and courteous interactions with colleagues.
