Job description

Job Title:  Elementary Counselor

Department:  Counseling

Education Level and Certification:  Masters degree from an accredited college/university required. Must possess at all times during employment a Nebraska Teaching Certificate.

Immediate Supervisor:  Building Principal

General Job Description:  In accordance with district policies and procedures, the Elementary Counselor is responsible for providing a comprehensive school counseling program that is preventative in design, developmental in implementation, and supports SPCS students in the areas of academic achievement, individual student planning, and personal and social development. The incumbent also serves as a consultant to educators, families, and community partners. Additionally the Elementary Counselor works closely with faculty and staff of local schools, central administration, various social services agencies and personnel from other public school systems and parents. 

Specific Job Functions: The Elementary Counselor:

  1. Helps students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment.

  2. Consults with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students.  

  3. Ensures that all activities conform to district guidelines.

  4. Communicates effectively with all members of the school district and community.

  5. Uses data to develop and inform the school counseling program and evaluates the program’s impact on the school’s instructional goals.

  6. Collaborates on the development and management of the comprehensive school counseling program with the school administrator or instructional leader.

  7. Assesses student needs and makes referrals to appropriate school resource personnel, social agencies, community agencies and alternative programs.

  8. Prepares students for the transition to the next level: Middle school, activities, and options.

  9. Uses individual/small group or classwide student planning activities and classroom guidance to assist students in navigation educational and community experiences that support their needs and develop their potential.

  10. Maintain confidentiality of information concerning colleagues, students, and parents in accordance with law and District rules.

  11. Assists/Supports Teachers in understanding their students, including providing and interpreting student data.

  12. Uses all available resources and data, including academic grades, discipline referrals and attendance data, to identify students in need and to deliver services.

  13. Adhere to all district policies, rules, regulations, and supervisor directives.

  14. Adhere to the code of ethics of the District and the code of ethics set forth in NDE Rule 27. The teacher must serve as a positive role model for other staff and students.

  15. Perform other tasks as assigned.  

Evaluation: All teaching staff are evaluated annually according to the provisions of the “Appraisal of Teacher Service in the  Springfield Platteview Community Schools Handbook.  This function is performed by the building principal or designee and the summative evaluation is completed twice annually for probationary staff and once annually for tenured staff as a minimum. All due process prescribed in state statutes is afforded teachers of Springfield Platteview Community Schools.
