POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Academic Advisor
This position is a part of a 5-person advising team working to provide services to over 700 undergraduate students and a growing number of non-thesis graduate students in the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics (ACE). Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and bring unique interests that create a rich academic environment. Students work closely with their advisors in ACE to identify and pursue myriad opportunities in the department and on campus which allow them to develop personally, academically, and professionally. In addition to advising duties, this position will work closely with ACE Director of Graduate Studies to promote ACE non-thesis masters programs across stakeholder groups. Our unit promotes lifelong learning and encourages our advising team to join pursue development opportunities that will enrich their professional lives and bring new ideas and perspectives to our team.
Be a part of our story. The Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics seeks candidates who will recruit, orient, and advise undergraduate and non-thesis graduate students in the Department of ACE; lead non-thesis graduate recruitment for the department, and teach a professional development course related to subjects of emphasis. Specific responsibilities are detailed below.
- Advise undergraduate students in key department concentrations on issues including curriculum requirements, course selection, registration, and post-graduation plans. Assist students with internships, job shadowing experiences, and other relevant experiential learning opportunities. Participate in undergraduate recruitment activities as part of the Undergraduate Advising team.
- Advise non-thesis graduate students with regard to admissions requirements, curriculum requirements, course selection, registration, and post-graduation plans. Assist non-thesis master's students with internships, job shadowing experiences, and other relevant experiential learning opportunities. Serve as primary point of contact for non-thesis graduate students with questions regarding university policy.
- In cooperation with departmental leadership, lead, manage, and direct recruitment activities for the department's non-thesis master's program. Support departmental leadership with cultivating partnerships with companies, government agencies, not-for-profits, and other organizations to create internship and employment opportunities for graduating non-thesis master's students.
- Welcome and advise new students during summer registration program, including transfer students, and assist with course selection and curriculum planning.
- Teach up to two one-credit hour courses in career exploration and professional development. POSITION REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience Required:
- Bachelor's degree in agricultural economics, business, communications, education, or related field.
- At least two years of work experience in agribusiness, international business, academic advising, teaching or similar fields. Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to work successfully with diverse groups in a team-oriented environment. Expertise with Microsoft Office. Preferred:
- Master's degree in agricultural economics, business, communications, higher education, or a related field
- Experience with recruitment, sales, or similar activities. Experience with data reporting/management. Experience working in a university environment. Experience with Adobe products, including Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop. Undergraduate or graduate teaching experience. Understanding of the higher education marketplace. Knowledge Required: Strong communications and interpersonal skills. Flexibility and strong problem-solving skills. SALARY AND APPOINTMENT DETAILS: This is a full-time 100%, 12-month Academic Professional appointment. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The salary range for this position starts at $50,000.
