Receives predetermined work assignments that are subject to a moderate level of control and review. Supervises team or shift of operational / technical personnel to ensure technical adequacy, timeliness, and regulatory compliance.
Supervises evening vehicle repairs operations to achieve continuous improvement of the Fleet Services maintenance and repair facility for approximately 90+ University owned heavy duty vehicles (GVWR 14,000 lbs +) to include, but not limited to: buses, boom and box trucks. Coordinate, supervise, monitor, and support night operations that ensure vehicle maintenance and repairs are completed on time and according to customer requests. Order and track all vehicle parts using customized software programs. Generate detailed reports for California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) and Garage Fleet Services head. Effectively communicate with Garage Fleet upper management and maintain positive relations with vendor and manufacturer representatives. Ensures compliance with numerous regulatory agencies, which include CUPA, storm water, hazardous waste, MSDS sheets, and PPE's. Directly support the University's strategic shift to ZEV heavy duty equipment, by providing subject matter expertise and ensuring garage technician staff are trained and equipped to effectively support the maintenance and repair of current, and future, University operations involving heavy duty zero emission and alternative fuels, which includes technology such as hybrid, EV, plug-in hybrid, CNG/RNG, hydrogen fuel cell.
Available Shift: Monday-Friday - 3.30pm-12.00am
Supervisory experience; ability to effectively supervise technical personnel. Progressive professional years of experience in automotive maintenance and repair including progressive experience in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise assigned shop personnel in teams as well as on an individual basis. Ability to provide effective leadership skills to staff. Skill in understanding effective operational and human resource practices.
Interpersonal skills, service orientation, active listening, critical thinking, ability to multi-task effectively in a high volume environment, organizational skills and effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing and electronically with a wide variety of campus customers and outside vendors. Demonstrated skill and ability to provide exceptional customer service. Demonstrated ability to independently follow through and prioritize workloads. Ability to develop and monitor solid positive employee relations within the department and the University community.
Working knowledge of university policies and procedures. Ability to understand and uphold the policies and procedures set by the University and the department. Demonstrated ability to use independent and sound judgment with tact and diplomacy. Skill in effectively negotiating and exchanging ideas and information with others in order to formulate appropriate policies and programs as they relate to vehicle maintenance and repair operations.
Ability to adapt to changing priorities, and manage staff time and effort accordingly to provide exceptional customer service. Demonstrated ability to work in a service environment with multiple deadlines and frequently changing priorities. Ability to work together with other departmental teams to contribute to overall performance and service output of the Fleet Services department.
Working knowledge of repair, maintenance and storage of fleet vehicles. Ability to perform industry-standard diagnostic and troubleshooting testing. Advanced skilled and knowledge related to the repair, maintenance and storage of heavy duty vehicles to include, but not limited to, buses, vans, trucks, Substantial skills and knowledge of vehicle preventive maintenance, break down repair, and troubleshooting techniques. Ability to perform diagnostic testing typically used in the automotive industry. Make recommendations based on findings.
