Drill Locator
A drill locator's job is to help drill operators locate the drill head and drill in accordance with blueprints. They may also:
- Verify locate marks
- Confirm the location of existing facilities
- Assist crew members in placing underground pipes, conduits, manual labor, and shovel work
- Operate power tools
- Inspect and maintain equipment regularly
- Operate motorized vehicles and trailers
- Secure and transport equipment to a work site and safely off-load
- Operate the drill rig efficiently and effectively
- Locate the drill head from one point to another without hitting any utilities at the correct depth
- Perform other duties as assigned
Other responsibilities may include:
- Handling physically demanding construction duties
- Reading prints and driving
- Performing tasks involving physical labor at road/highway sites and heavy construction
Some say that directional drilling is a demanding job that requires quick learning and adaptability. Others say that directional drillers must be able to bend, kneel, stand, and walk for long periods of time. They must also be able to lift, push, and pull 50 lbs. regularly
Qualifications
- Be able to operate a variety of digging tools (Experience with Vermeer machines required)
- Strong knowledge of underground utilities
- Accurately measure distances, using tapes or other measuring device
- Have a High School diploma.
- Maintain a clean, courteous and professional demeanor.
- Be physically able to lift and move up to 75 pounds.
- Be willing to work in all weather conditions.
- Working knowledge of DOT regulations (Vehicle and Operator Qualifications), etc
- Have a valid state driver's license and a clean driving or safety record.
- Be able to work independently & efficiently to meet deadlines.
- Satisfactory results from a background/employment history investigation and drug screening
