Job Summary Department Purpose

The Professional Veterinary staff is responsible to provide veterinary medical services for in-patient and outpatient areas and includes over 5,000+ non-human primates housed at the California National Primate Research Center. Responsibilities are performed under general direction and include all aspects of health care and preventive medicine. Work includes providing veterinary support services to investigators. Perform management-related tasks under the general direction of departmental management. Provide support and training to students, visiting veterinarians, residents (primate, lab animal, zoo), and clinical veterinary technicians in all aspects of primate medicine.

The California National Primate Research Center, CNPRC at UC Davis, is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health problems where non-human primates is the animal of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to both UC Davis and NIH missions of teaching and service.

Job Summary

Reporting to Senior Manager of Primate Veterinary Services and under general direction, provide all aspects of veterinary health care and preventive medicine care, which includes performing routine animal care rounds of emergency and critical animal care cases. Duties include: Oversee and coordinate workflow of assigned Animal Health Technicians (AHTs) including addressing their questions, providing any needed clinical support or technical training of care procedures, protocols, and making sure all of work is completed in accordance with CNPRC Animal Healthcare standards. Evaluate chronic metabolic cases such as diabetics, water restricted animals, kidney transplants, etc. as necessary. Perform all clinical procedures including skin grafts, radiographs, examinations, etc. File and document laboratory results and assist in the documentation and maintenance of medical problem lists, long-term outpatient records, and review hospital and out-patient records and radiology reports. Provide onsite shift hours and on call hours coverage as well as participating in research support activities. Review records for non-breeders as required by Research Services. Writes shift and case management summaries of both planned and unanticipated activities that occur during weekend shifts.

Provide veterinary support services to research investigators, collaborating with research investigators in scientific research in the design, implementation, interpretation and communication of research projects. Perform management and/or supervisor-related tasks under the general direction of senior veterinary staff as assigned. Provide support and training to students, visiting veterinarians, UCD residents, rotating Lab Animal Medicine residents, and clinical veterinary technicians in all aspects of primate medicine. Oversee assigned pre-project/pre-shipment physical exams; review management areas and their cases (i.e., 20% weight loss, prolonged menses, chronic diarrhea, diet manipulation, etc.).
