Job description
Job Summary
Assists physicians in the care and treatment of patients in the Ophthalmology Outpatient Department.
Job Duties
Assists physicians with examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatments, and dressings.
Also assists with minor clinic surgery, special procedures, ophthalmic lavage, and preoperative preparation of patients.
Provides postoperative instructions when indicated.
Compiles preliminary histories on new patients.
Records new problems, including all current medications, on return patients on Epic charting.
Preceptor for new personnel such as ophthalmology assistant.
Also will precept for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses on technical equipment and training.
Assists in writing and reviewing ophthalmic policies and procedures.
Tests visual acuity, near and distant, and intraocular pressures.
Performs other types of ophthalmic testing.
Administers dilating agents for ophthalmic fundus examination upon successful completion of ophthalmic pharmacology exam by licensed medical staff and supervised member.
Assists with and sets up laser treatments, ultrasound testing and cryopexy surgery.
Performs ultrasound for measuring intraocular lens.
Completes calculations of findings and obtains Keratometer Readings.
Prepares cultures and pathology specimens for the laboratory and transports to the correct areas.
Takes and records vital signs.
Cleans and prepares instruments and equipment.
Sends for repair or exchange.
Assists with the emergency admission of patients.
Applies ident-a-bands.
Ensures permission for treatment and record of belongings sheets are signed.
Ensures patient is properly transported to hospital unit.
Completes necessary charges for appliances, dressings, medications, special procedures, and testing for the patient.
Orders pharmaceuticals, linen, stock, stationery, surgical instruments, and other ophthalmic supplies for clinic.
Scribes in electronic medical record according to what the physician dictates.

Certified Ophthalmic Assistant - Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)
