Job Summary
The Deputy Director plays an essential role in the leadership of the Albany County Public Library. This position overseas the Library’s public services and provides day-to-day supervision of library activities ensuring that these activities align with ACPL’s mission and values. The Deputy Director serves as a member of the Library’s Leadership Team, providing input and recommendations regarding library operations and policy.
Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership:
- Oversee public programing; support staff in offering consistent, high-quality programs; ensure programming is in line with community needs and library priorities.
- Oversee Library service desks, ensuring high quality professional service to library patrons.
- Guide collection development for the library, ensuring that collection development guidelines are up to date and in line with library strategic direction; support staff in effectively managing the collection and materials budgets within the guidelines.
- Collaborate with the Library Director to guide the overall vision and direction of the library.
- Motivate staff to actively contribute to the organization creating a culture of trust and fostering an environment where all staff members are valued.
- Support staff’s efforts to achieve organizational excellence and encourage a library-wide spirit of cooperation.
Organizational Management:
- Demonstrate library-wide expectations for all staff based on policy and procedure, support staff in meeting those expectations.
- Manage workforce based on organizational goals and staffing needs; ensure accurate recruitment of staff based on library strategies and culture; oversee hiring, training, and evaluation documents.
- Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate the Adult Services Librarian, Outreach Librarian, Youth Services Librarian, and Technical Services Librarian.
- Follow methods for effective evaluation of performance and take action to address performance problems; support supervisors in addressing performance problems with their direct reports.
- Develop measurable goals for staff and self; communicate clear expectations; provide consistent feedback; and enable staff to successfully meet goals.
Community Relations:
- Develop a clear understanding of the financial assistance provided by the Albany County Public Library Foundation and the Friends of the Albany County Public Library and provide recommendations on best uses for this funding.
- Support the Director in ensure that the library is a visible and valued part of the community through educational outreach on library services and programs.
- Build mutually beneficial relationships with active partners such as: Friends of the Library book sale crew, and community groups who provide programming.
- Identify and maintain partnerships with local, regional, and state organizations through participation in community and professional groups.
Staff Development:
- Ensure high staff morale by building a culture that encourages strategic teamwork through the use of shared resources and openness to change.
- Lead staff development opportunities based on training needs; actively seek ways to train and mentor staff; assist staff in finding professional development opportunities and create development plans for staff to gain necessary competencies.
ACPL Board of Directors:
- Collaborate with the Library Director to prepare reports and supporting documents for Board meetings.
- Provide professional advice on library issues, especially strategic direction, planning, and policy to the board.
- Review and recommend policies; write, interpret, and enforce procedures; supervise appropriate follow up based on board’s direction.
Financial Management:
- Develop a specific understanding of the library’s financials, particularly those pertaining to Library programming and collection, including authorizing use of approved budget, understanding funding sources, ensuring equitable distribution of resources to library departments, managing accounts and making projections.
- Actively and creatively solve problems related to funding complications and seek out cost-saving opportunities.
- In collaboration with the Library Director, participate in project management on large-scale projects by allocating funds, monitoring expenses, and overseeing project activity.

Salary & Benefits
- This is a salaried position. The salary for this position $70,000.
- This is a full-time, benefitted position. Benefit package includes: Medical Insurance paid by employer; life, dental, and vision paid by employer; and required statewide retirement plan.

Preferred Qualifications
- Master in Library Science preferred, experience may be substituted for education.
- Experience managing library collections and implementing public programming in a library setting.
- Minimum of three years of supervisory experience.
