TITLE: Pianist

Part-Time Lay Staff: 10-12 hours per week
Nonexempt
In addition to the responsibilities listed below, the Pianist must uphold the United Methodist policy and doctrine as well as local church policy, growing and maturing as a disciple of Jesus, and leading others off toward a deep inner life with Jesus.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Working in conjunction with the Director of Worship and the pastoral staff, assist in choosing appropriate service music for weekly worship, taking factors into consideration such as sermon topic, liturgical season, chosen scripture passages, etc.
- In conjunction with the HUMC organist, provide accompaniment (hymns, doxology, etc.) and service music (preludes, postludes, offertories, communion music, etc.) as needed for the 8:30 AM traditional service
- Play piano prelude music for the 10 AM contemporary service
- Depending on the skills of the candidate, occasionally serve as pianist in the 10 AM worship band (optional)
- Accompany the choir at rehearsals (currently Mondays 7-8 PM) and in worship. The choir currently sings about 6-8 times per year, though this could increase.
- Provide accompaniment for special music at Sunday services (8:30 AM, 10:00 AM) and occasional special services (Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Christmas Eve, etc.)
- As needed, provide music for weddings and memorial services
SKILLS NEEDED
- A pianist who is skilled both as a soloist and an accompanist
- A strong sight-reader
- Familiarity and comfort with a range of musical styles, from classical music and hymnody to popular contemporary styles
- Preference to candidates who can transpose, improvise, play by ear, and/or read chord sheets if needed
EDUCATION
- A bachelor’s degree is preferred; candidates without a degree but with requisite skills and experience may be considered
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $20.00 - $30.00 per hour
Expected hours: 8 – 12 per week
